After playing with Voxel Map on all earlier versions of minecraft, for some reason, I can't seem to get it to work on 1.14.4. Xaeros minimap was the first one I could find and get to work, but it's frustrating. I really don't like a lot of it's features but until I find something better or get VoxelMap to work I need some info.
What distance, up or down, is the cave mode showing?
In Voxel map it shows nothing below your feet and shows any voids up to about 10-12 blocks above your head, Now in Xaeros I see a mineshaft and went over to it. I mined up 15 blocks and down 15 blocks and still can't intersect it.
Why does the minimap free north but locks it if you ask for expand?
Lastly, what is a better minimap to try although I'm still hoping on VoxelMap
I'm using Java version of minecraft on Mac OSX 10.12.6
Bibliocraft is not strictly a minimap mod but it provides a map item called the Atlas that creates a minimap from the vanilla map items stitched together automatically. It's pretty nifty, but I don't think it's as functional as one of the above dedicated mods.
I don't know how many of them are updated to 1.14 yet, or if so how stable they might be, but Xaero's and Journeymap always seem to be leaders of the pack.

Forget it!!
My son just located the correct VoxelMap jar to work with 1.14.4 in Forge. I'm saved and can now operate in a system I'm used to. Mod version is:
forgemod_VoxelMap-1.9.13b_for_1.14.4.jar
Loaded it in and voila! works like a charm. Don't know where hw found it but it's out there somewhere.
