Does anyone know where mod minecraft programming is going now that Microsoft owns Minecraft?
I really want to know, is Java going to continue to be a good language for this for say 4-5 years? If you have info, if you could give sources (e.g. websites) that would be great.
I'd like to get my kids interested in programming - Minecraft modding sounds like a good option (as my kids love playing the game and I have a bit of Java experience). I'm a little worried Java might get pushed aside by Microsoft (e.g. I hear you don't need Java for the Windows 10 edition, though obviously that's just one edition).
As far as I know, Microsoft buying Mojang (not just minecraft) was more of a way of them getting access to the sales revenue of one of the highest selling games ever, and not so that Microsoft could take over development.
As for teaching your kids programming, Java is a very inflexible language to start off with. I would recommend looking into Processing first. It's completely free and was developed as an introduction to programming and is therefore quite well documented in terms of learning how to use it. Processing is more of an instant gratification thing; you can't do as complex things, however it is easier to do smaller things in Processing than in Java, making it more enjoyable to learn as a first programming language. It is also a more basic off branch of Java, following many of the same styles and rules, meaning that Java is a good option after getting to know Processing.
I'm resurrecting this thread. I have the same questions -- what will happen to Java modding in Minecraft now that Microsoft has acquired Minecraft? Is putting the time and energy into learning Java modding worthwhile?
About learning programming and Minecraft for your kids, I would highly recommend the Adventures in Minecraft book by Whaley and O'Hanlon. They have ported Raspberry Pi Minecraft so that it can be coded using Python. Much more accessible than Java! I use it in my classes as a first text-based coding language.

Here is a link to their official website: https://processing.org/
Thanks Mister_Mystery_.
I'll look into Processing.
Both my kids have dabled in some programming already - Scratch, JavaScript on Khan academy, MIT AppInventor.
I think the click and assemble stuff is great for starting out, teaching basic concepts, and allowing the kids to make some stuff quickly.
I'm wondering at this point whether something a little more challenging might help get them to take on some ambitious projects.
