I am having countless problems modding 1.6.1, even though I'm following the exact steps of people who modded easily and successfully.
I'm just trying to get TMI (TooManyItems) to work with 1.6.1. I've tried this with adding the files manually to the .jar and using the new MCPatcher beta for 1.6.x, but no methods work for me. Yes, I know how to install mods prior to 1.6, I had a ton running on 1.5.2 correctly. For some reason I just can't get anything -- including 1.5.2 -- to work with the new laucher once any mods are installed.
When I install TMI in a copy of release 1.6.1, all seems well until trying to launch Minecraft with the modded .jar file. I make a new profile and sign into it, and it changes my folder "newmod" to “newmod” in a new folder within my Versions folder. It has nothing contained in it. (I've tried leaving it empty and filling it with the .jar and .json, neither of which had any success)
When I install TMI and attempt to run the modified .jar with the new Minecraft launcher, it states that it finished with "1 failure".
Below is the launcher's log:

Hey guys. I got my modded version to work earlier today and I got the exact same problem as the OP. It seemed like editing the .json file with textedit was the problem.
What I did to fix the problem was:
1. Open the .json file with TextEdit and copy the entire content of the file.
2. Open your browser and go to http://www.jsoneditoronline.org, delete the content in the left box.
3. Paste the copied content from the .json to the left box on the website and edit the ID as you would have done it in TextEdit.
4. When done editing, press the "Save" button in the upper right corner of the website, and the .json file should have been saved on your computer.
5. Copy the downloaded .json file to your versions folder and rename it so it matches the version folder's name and the .jar file's name.
You should now be able to open the Minecraft launcher and selecting your modded release without it failing opening or being called some weird “” name.
I hope it works out for you as it did for me :-)
Please help me! Okay so I have Forge downloaded and Im not really sure how to use it. But I tried what you did above but it still doesn't work for me. I think my problem is opening up the .jar file and placing the items in. What do you use to open it? When I do it I have to make a completely new file folder and change the name to .jar because I cant figure out how to just open the file and place in the mod files.
Guys I had the same problem but fixed it.
You have to compress all the class files in your .jar and rename the archive. Here is a tutorial I made to help it works I promise!

1: 'compress' your 1.6.1.jar into a .zip file
2: change the name into 1.6.1.jar {it should be 1.6.1.jar.zip so delete the .zip}
3: try to run it now, when the icon is a .jar default icon
Hope This WORKS!
P.S. i dont know if forge is updated yet for 1.6.1 OS X
