I have an enchantment that basically tracks the number of times a player hits any mob (and the number resets if no mobs are hit after 5 seconds, irrelevant) and gives their sword a damage multiplier depending on how many consecutive hits they have. I have that part all worked out, but testing it in-game, I'd like to see exactly how many hits I have and what my multiplier is. Currently I'm just running this code every time the player hits a mob:
But this quickly spams up the chat if you're actually building the multiplier. What I'd like is for the message to display once, and update accordingly. Is there any way to do this (in 1.6.4)? Thank you.

Don't think there is. Chat messages are hardcoded to disappear after a certain amount of time anyways, so after X seconds the message will fade away. You could perhaps make yourself a custom HUD element that only pops up when the multiplier is changed, and do some fancy rendering maybe to make it fade out when the multiplier sits after a bit.
