I guess the simplest explanation is that if redstone dust is dust, how would it stay in place going vertically? Now I know most of Minecraft doesn't follow gravity, but I feel like this is one of those exceptions.
Either way, you can already go vertically pretty easily using slabs, it just requires a 2 block wide space rather than the 1 block you're proposing.

I support this, also I would like to be able to place redstone dust underneath half slabs.
The aquatic update allowed the placing of water underneath half slabs on the top half of a block.
Why isn't there a redstone update yet which allows the placing of redstone underneath half slabs?
Mojang makes dumb decisions with their game development sometimes IMO.
they artificially restrict things for no good reason, it's not like being able to place redstone underneath half slabs or vertically on a flat surface would make the game any easier with regards to survival, it wouldn't. All it would mean is less bulky and less time consuming builds.

There's not many things that can be placed under top half slabs because it's not easy to do. From what I understand, the waterlogging feature was also a pain to add.
How would you justify being able to place "dust" vertically?

Making a well designed program in general isn't easy to do, it is no different with video games, the developers are already aware of this.
Every new feature added requires work, and they are paid to do this.
Why should it be up to the modding community to add in features that people were requesting be put in the game? something like being able to place redstone circuits vertically and underneath half slabs wouldn't exactly break the game or make survival any easier or harder, a change such as this would also apply to creative mode if it got implemented.

Yeah, it's possible to do, which is how they added waterlogging. Here's the deal, waterlogging wasn't as difficult as I first imagined, they just added a tag to the waterloggable blocks. The difference with dust is that it's a whole different block, and placing 2 blocks in a one block space doesn't exactly work. Possible, but really not worth it.
You also never answered my question. How do you justify placing DUST vertically?

Because then you don't have to make a staircase consisting of blocks to get the redstone dust to connect the circuit to the upper level of your contraption.
it would result in less ugly builds for a start and you could keep your redstone circuitry in a tighter smaller space.
it is possible to connect upper circuits vertically in the current game, sort of, but it involves the use of sticky pistons and redstone blocks.
That to me is a nuisance, how can you justify this? it means you also waste iron for crafting the pistons in the first place.
Not everything you do in the game should require the use of iron.

I don't think you understand what I mean. Redstone dust is dust. Last I checked, you can't put dust vertically. Take some dust from around your house and try it. You can't do it.

Not saying you can place dust vertically in Minecraft, but I did say it is possible to connect them using other redstone based items.
Read what I said earlier and then you'd understand it.
Redstone dust as it currently is in the game cannot be placed vertically on the blocks.
But it is a change the OP is wanting, and I agree with him (or her, anonymous user, don't know identity)
I know you can't do it now. I mean that it wouldn't make sense to add it because placing "dust" vertically doesn't make sense because well, it's dust.
Pause are you aware that redstone dust going verticle to go up 1 block makes no sense? But it does it ingame already... I mean its not a half slab or stair block which are both considered to be somewhat diagonal pixel-wise, a block is a verticle small wall.
I feel like it should be easy to explain why the logic of minecraft shouldnt be the ->Determining factor<- of whether something should be added, given the nature of the game. I mean:
- We can start with not using "flint and steel" to light torches. Torches are not on fire when in your hand but are on fire out of the blue when you place them. Makes no sense with minecraft logic seeing as to how we light other things on fire
- Redstone dust is magically powered when its touching a stick to create a redstone torch, redstone dust on the other cant be powered on its own
- We set our spawn point by using the normal function of sleeping in a bed INSTEAD of using a magical block like the block they just added to the game. Villagers cant set their spawn by sleeping so by minecrafts logic, only the new block they plan on adding should be the only thing to set a spawn point
- Sand falls and Sandstone can hover in midair as if somehow condensed sand is magical
🌟🌟🌟This next point should really get the point im making here, for determining when its justified to Break logic 🌟🌟🌟
- 2 bucket of water creates an infinite source of water. Why? Because it makes the game more ->Simple<-
- 1 bucket of water can make an infinite amount of water. Why? Same reason for the 2 buckets
Etc
🌟🌟🌟Plus its not like they couldnt come up with some hocus pocus reason to make redstone dust go up a wall. Just add slime to it and poof, slime redstone dust
Just like how they made honey not connect to slime for no reason other than to make building simpler...🌟🌟🌟
If redstone dust could go straight up or down a wall, using redstone would be SO much simpler...
I dont understand why we dont have this yet. Why dont we have this yet??
I know you can kind of get around with redstone torches but seriously what the heck, just let us use dust
