One of my favourite skin/texture packs is the City pack. I like the look and feel of the blocks. They are to me just, more symmetrical and look better than vanilla. I like how the trap doors are manhole covers )or industrial fans, haven't decided yet), and come on...the mobs are hilariously awesome. Dolphins with snorkels, goggles, and floaties? Turtles in scuba suits? And speaking of suits...those dapper little creepers. AMIRITE? LOL. Not to mention the maintenance worker snow golems, police officer iron golems...I digress.
The question that I have been wondering about this pack the most is, "what's with the armour skins?" They kind of make sense...but kind of don't. I guess I can see why leather is skinned as a Secret Service or FBI uniform, but I feel like the chain skin and the leather skin should be swapped. Why? Because chain is skinned like a Biker (motorcycle/motorbike rider). To me, that should be leather. Chain could represent the Secret Service as their job is to transport and protect the President (in the USA anyway, I am sure the prime minister and equivalent and all that have similar). They usually have PDWs, and body armour. So chain makes more sense there.
I definitely like the fact that Gold is a Fire Fighter kit, and I guess I can see Iron being a policeman (I think...although the riot mask kind of throws me). But...what is up with Diamond especially? It is literally a Doctor's outfit. Or perhaps surgeon. Consisting of Scrubs for the legs and chest, a hair net and facemask for the head, and little surgeons booties for feet. But...scrubs are thin...and disposable .Why is Diamond, the strongest Armour set on the vanilla game, modeled after light, virtually no protection other than clothing and face mask scrubs? I get doctors, and surgeons especially, are very important...but I wouldn't want to go to battle in scrubs...
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't really upset me, just makes me curious. I would have figured a soldier in full kit would make more sense for diamond. The ACH(Army combat Helmet) with perhaps a boom mic. and goggles for the head, a Combat shirt with an IBA (individualized Body Armour) set including sappy plates and perhaps a rucksack for chest, and uniform pants with kneepads for legs, and with combat boots for well...boots. That to me makes more sense for the strongest Armour set. Especially since combat is what soldiers are trained for, and armour is used to protect soldiers in combat. Thus, the best armournlogically would be that.
In regards to iron armour, perhaps a police officer in full riot gear, not just a riot helmet would be a better skin.
I do kind of understand though. It is a game geared mostly for children after all. So they don't want to get too crazy. The logic of Doctors/surgeons being the best of the best does fit rather well in that aspect. I suppose when looking at it that way, it makes total sense. Kind of...conditions kids to desire to be doctors or surgeons by making a doctor/soldier skin to represent the best armour. It is a good trade to be in. Way better the a foot soldier, or a policeman. Far more better still being a doctor ratger than a biker.
But hey. Secret Service isn't too shabby either. You are trusted and trained so much, and your entire job is to protect the most powerful people in the world, the leaders of countries.
Perhaps I should make an "Improved City Texture pack" suggestion thread

Hm-yes.
Yes I think I shall...
