note that the middle piston.is water logged. place the water first and then the piston. im not sure if thats how its supposed to be... but i updated my auto platform with the technique.
update... so i uswd my original design in a survival game just a bit ago and uhg. confusing. so i went back and got rid of the upward facing observer. i hated manualy lowering that...
then i cleaned up the redundant or now unnecessary observers... so... the new two observer design is only 2 blocks high and makes a 12x13 platform. aside from being one row short, its just as fast as the 13x13 and much easier to build. especially when your hopping around 100 meters off the ground...

i also tuned the observers so that its smooth and never jams until the platform is complete. if you have trouble placing the upward looking observer, build a 4-5 tall pillar, place a piston and then the observer. then manually lower it.
pretty slick and a life saver if your spending alot of time in the sky and need a solid platform asap but dont want to lug around a ton of cobblestone.
edit: sometimes the clock starts with a bad timing. remove and replace the rear dust until it smoothes out : P
