Ok so here is what happened, I was playing a survival world with my friend. Shortly after we spawn in, we find a village. So, we head to the village, and I see an iron golem. So, I decided to kill it. So, I build a 4-block pillar and start attacking it. 3 seconds later it hit me off of the pillar even though I built a 4-block pillar so I run into a villager house and wait till he stops trying to attack me 5 seconds later I was greeted with the death screen I was confused because I was safe inside the villager house. So please if anyone can explain this please do.
It has happened to me. They can. Not easily, since they need to be searching for you right next to the wall which they aren't if you're in a home, but they can.

So...what killed you?
The death notice in chat should say "Playername was killed by ......" that will tell you what killed you.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
a iron golem
i know what killed me it was a iron golem. but it could not have killed me because i was safe inside a villager house.
Golems can hit players through walls and glass - technically I think it refers to hitboxes or similar

thank you for the info
Iron golems have a huge reach and reaches ignore solid blocks. This is also why ravagers can hit you through walls.
