So i recently played the Windows 10 Edition, i've played Pocket Edition since 2013, but now i mainly play Java Edition. So when i played Windows 10 Edition for the first time, i was blown away by how smooth it runs. You see, i played Java Edition on a low end laptop, i'd say, normally at 30 FPS. But when i played Windows 10 Edition, it was normally 60 FPS, i know the main selling point of Bedrock Edition (Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Pocket, and Windows 10) was crossplay and how smooth it runs, and i want to know, what other things Bedrock has over Java Edition.
I've played Java since quite near the beginning and with every iteration of the game, my old PC would get slower and slower, to the extent that I had to stop playing the last few updates. I had Minecraft on the XBox One but I could never play it due to me being too used to keyboard and mouse. Through more luck than judgement, I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse and hooked it up to the console with a view to playing Battlefield 1, (keyboard worked, mouse didn't!), just as a test, I tried Minecraft and I couldn't believe that it worked. So for the first time, I can play Minecraft on a large screen TV, with lovely colour and zero lag and get to play with a keyboard and mouse.
I'm still fairly new into Bedrock, I can't see any huge differences, just some slight ones. Things like place and break reach seems to be longer on Bedrock making building easier. Did I mention NO lag? I used to crash if I went near a jungle, I now live in one. I can have everything at max settings with max render distance, I can see my base from a great distance now.
I am sure there are plenty of differences, but nothing that affects it in a bad way, I wished I'd had this years ago.
The game play gaps between Bedrock and Java are closing fast. At this point in time I would say the benefits of one over the other comes down to a matter of preference, especially if you are playing Bedrock on a PC.
Java has the mods. Bedrock is limited to behavior packs and resource packs. But even in Bedrock a server can have single player sleep and mob heads. It is the much more advanced mods that Java has that Bedrock does not.
As you mentioned, Bedrock is very smooth and a decent PC can have very good render distance (32++ chuncks). Java simply cannot compare to Bedrock for lag or game view.
For more advanced game play, Java edition allows you to build above the Nether ceiling ... at least for now. Bedrock edition does not.
Also for more advanced game play, Bedrock edition allows you to build with actual BEDROCK in Survival ... Java edition makes this nearly impossible. Bedrock edition also has trident killers, but no sweeping edge.
The game play differences are being steadily removed. The PC performance differences may never go away.
Kind of similar to the comments made above, I've recently made the switch from Java since 2012, to now Bedrock starting like two weeks ago.
Again there are minor differences that you've gotten accustomed to like being able to put items into your Hotbar more efficiently, not being able to
technically pause the game, the lack of a hardcore mode difficulty, or even just not having mods and just having add-ons and behavior packs (which by the way are increasing as more players switch to Bedrock).
But there are just so many more pros than cons, specifically in the performance side of things, now I'm able to run a decent shader when I wasn't able to on Java, as well as smoother world loading.
Also, there's a lot of hinting that Microsoft plans on having Bedrock as its focus rather than Java (example of now migrating Mojang accounts to Microsoft) which is sad but happy that it's evolving into something greater since Bedrock just shows so much potential.
