I am looking to simply set up a world on an older PC running Window 7 for my kids to access via xbox, iPad, and Amazon Fire tablets. It would pretty much just be hosting a server on an old machine that I don't use anymore to allow crossplay with their friends. A few months back I saw some articles mentioning this MIGHT be a possibility in the future, but I haven't been able to find any recent news.
It would be a huge hassle for me to update the old machine, so I'm hoping I might be able to just wait....

Does anyone know if this might be coming up?
You can host a server with MiNet or Nukkit on the older PC for your kids to connect to.
