My friends and I are playing on survival mode and we had this idea to build a fighting pit with 3 mobspawner mechanisms all feeding into the base of the pit so we could fight the mobs. We adapted the design of the spawner off something we saw online and did in a previous world. The issue is, we can’t seem to get anything to spawn in them (we are working in just one of the units now to make sure it works before duplicating our efforts on the other 2).
The spawner consists of 2 - 12x12x3 rooms stacked on top of one another with dispensers of water in each corner, which when turned on, flow water towards the middle of the room where there is a 2x2 hole for the mobs to drop down into more water which pushes them into the pit. We lit up the entire area around and inside the pit and inside the spawner it is completely dark, but still nothing is spawning! We even searched everywhere around where we constructed this and lit up any underground caves.
Any idea why it’s not working?
i should add that we are playing on Xbox one, better together update.
Too many possibilities to accurately guess without more details (pictures often help).
I agree we need more info.
When I first read the OP I assumed that mob spawners are involved when they said
build a fighting pit with 3 mobspawner mechanisms
If I'm right in my assumption, then the advice you gave could be slightly incorrect (I'm basing this on the PC version, so XBox may be different)
The MobSpawner "is only active when a player is within a radius of 16 blocks from the spawner." (Taken from the Wiki)
Your advice is for 'Naturally' Spawning mobs.. even then there are some differences between Java & Bedrock editions as found on the Wiki
Hi sorry I’ll clarify.. not using actual spawners.. but the rooms we’ve constructed are supposed to be dark enough so mobs will spawn naturally. I’ll take some pictures and post them.
Pictures added to original post! Note that the 2 pics of the cobble stone room.. those don’t normally have torches but I had to light it up so you could see the inside in the picture)
First, a caveat, I am not familiar with the Xbox version, but am given to understand there are meaningful differences…

It's fine for mob spawners, but for simple mob farms like a 20x20 platform 24 blocks above the player it's still off. I play in hard difficulty and there are barely mobs spawning inside my mob farm/trap. Ii tried multiple positions around it, but nothing really changed except an occasional mob drop every minute or so. The overall spawn rate seems to be quite different from the Java edition."
This seems to be describing the same sort of error you are experiencing.
Short version: There appears to be a reported but unfixed bug in Bedrock (at least the Win10 & XBox versions) that causes this problem.

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
Dark room spawners don't work well if there are other places for mobs to spawn, unless you've put in a LOT of work lighting up caves within an 128 block radius (spherical) of where you are you probably won't get a lot of spawns.
Your best bet would be to either find nearby cage spawner dungeons and build the pit there, but then you wouldn't get creepers and probably not spiders (except) cave spiders.
Or build the spawners in the sky so you can wait more than 128 blocks above any unlit caves or ground.
You can either build the pit up there as well or build a holding area up there (or just not flush the spawners until you're ready).
You should all wait up by the spawners, or offline, and then send at least one person down to the pit area before dropping the mobs, while leaving at least one person up top until the mobs have dropped.
Your problem is the flushing system that has water flowing OVER the drop hole. Mobs swim up in water, so with water over the drop they won't fall through. You need to either adjust the size of the room so that the water stops at the edge of the drop hole, or use signs to block the water from covering the hole (assuming signs do actually block water in XBox/Bedrock edition).

Mobs won't spawn within 24 blocks of any player, and any that spawn more than 128 blocks away will instantly despawn.
Dispensers can, and frequently do get out of sync, so you may have water in your spawn area all the time.
Spiders can clog a 2x2 drop.
Render distance must be 10 or more for hostile mob spawning, due to a bug.
I agree we need more info.

I think you mean 25, hostile mobs won't spawn if a player is within 24 blocks.
Just testing.
True. 25*
