It uses a terrain generater file. When you make a 0.7.x texture pack, if you delete the terrain file it would use the apks terrain generater to make the game more colorful and more beautiful. Now, that's all it does. Didn't you notice how the game looks more colorful?

I would say assets/images/items-opaque.png is your items file, and assets/images/terrain-atlas.tga is your terrain file.
Mip0, mip1 etc. are lower resolution versions of the same terrain file.
The terrain file looks to use an Alpha channel instead of just having normal transparent bits.
I currently have no way to test all this out though...
