Been doing a little maintenance work in Rhageos Nether. Working on replacing the gravel roadways with cobblestone slabs for durability. I understand cobblestone should be Ghast Blast-proof, but haven't tested that yet. To get enough cobblestone I built a cobble-generator just the other side of the Nether gate.
Also, I decided to build my first Nether-Art: and landscape marker that would make it obvious when I was close to my home base:
I have finally found a Nether Fortress!!! Will post pix later. Right now I'm building a road to it, so I don't accidentally get lost, since it's around a couple corners and up and down a hill or two. And I'll need to prep myself for exploring it without getting lost also. It's bigger than I expected, although since this is my first one it might be completely normal. One of the hallways is so long you can't see the other end of it. I put a Nether Gate into it, just to see where it came out. It was a desert biome, and probably a very long way away from my main camp.
I decided to see just how far away the new Nether Gate was, so I jumped home, built a compass, then went back through and started walking home. I haven't made it yet, because I ran into a village. I stopped to try and save the villagers from wandering off into the wilds or getting killed by mobs.
Actually have a fair amount of updates to give you this time!
First off, yes, cobblestone slabs are Ghast Blast-proof. Second, it turns out Ghasts aren't that tough. Killed it with just a couple hits from a stone sword. Of course, being able to get close enough to hit it with a sword is a serious challenge.
Attached are some more pix of my Nether work:
Built this bridge across the gap by hand:
The view back toward home base:
I thought leaving the lava stream there was a nice aesthetic choice:
Apparently, now that zombies and skeletons drop armor and experience, you have to kill them personally for them to drop anything. My zombie+skeleton machine is no longer generating bones, arrows, carrots, etc. So I'm going to have redesign them so that I can whack them in person rather than just let them drown. I tested it by going back into Arkel, where I had the skeletons dropping onto cactus. They didn't drop anything.
If I wanted to just fight them I could leave the spawners where they were and open up the walls so they could flood my dungeon. I'm more interested in the arrows and bones than I am the armor or experience. Right now I don't really need either one of those, although I'm sure someday I will. I'm still thinking over some ideas on how to handle the rebuild. I need to decide if I'm going to do it in peaceful mode or not.
I've modified the spawners so that both zombies and skeletons flow together and rise up where I can beat on them with a stick. Then the booty drops down and flows out the side where I can pick it up. Baby zombies can still slip out through the pipes sometimes though. I'll need to fix that for sure.
Spent some time working on that unnamed village. I'm cheating a bit and doing it on Peaceful mode, because I haven't lit up the town properly yet to prevent mobs from spawning in it.
This will be the main entrance. It's mob-proof and villager-proof. To enter, you enter the water on one side and let yourself sink down. Then walk to the other side and swim up.
The wall is functionally complete, although I have work to do to finish it off all pretty-like. I also scattered a gross of torches around the inside to minimize the number of mobs that would spawn inside. I also closed off the 3 cavern entrances. I'll have to mess with those and see if I can make them player-only entrances of some sort so that I can come and go without worrying about breakouts.
I've also given the village 3 Iron Golem protectors. It used up most of my iron reserves that I imported from my Base Camp, but that's okay. Once I start mining/exploring again I'll replenish it quickly.
One of the new Iron Golem protectors, and an accidental catch of two Villagers getting freaky in public:
I may have scattered torches all around the grounds, but mobs will find a place to spawn regardless:
I went through several versions of a farm in this village (I really need to come up with a name for it some day). I had a couple of goals for it: 1) Easy to farm using water and a single collection point for the crops, and 2) Accessible by the villagers for their planting and harvesting.
I tried several variants of the '9x9 square + water drop in the center', but in setting that up to catch the crops and water and funnel them to a single location, I had to build barriers around the edge, and this caused the villagers to start jumping in and out, which damaged the crops and converted tilled land back to plain dirt.
Finally what I wound up with was a single long slope. To harvest it, at the top of the slope I pour a bucket of water, wait for it to wash everything to the bottom and go collect it. The villagers can get in and out through gaps in the water-channeling fence (and hopefully the iron golems can't).
And sometimes, the villagers just plain act weird:
They look like they're considering when to kidnap and sacrifice me on an altar somewhere....
An Iron Golem got into the farm this morning. I think he jumped up on top of the food chest and then over the fence. The big ol' brute trampled all over a bunch of crops, and when I opened up a spot in the gate for him to get out, a second one promptly walked in. *sigh*
I finally got them out, the crops replaced, and the fence openings capped so that big tall destructive things can't get in.
On the plus side, when I last harvested the crops I only put a few seeds and potatoes in, and the villagers have done the work of planting the rest of the fields for me. I think I need to build some houses down near the bottom of the slope though - they haven't planted down there. I think it's outside their seek range.
Now that 0.13 has come in, I need to learn how to use all the new toys they've provided us. Glee!!
And I've built the villagers a new 3-door house down at the bottom of the fields, so hopefully they'll start planting the whole farm now. And I'm thinking of building them an apartment building on the other side. A couple floors with 6-8 doors on each side of each floor.
Semi-divine bovine! They weren't kidding when they said they increased the spawn rate of Ghasts! I got swarmed by a half-dozen of the things just trying to walk between gates. I got killed twice and they blew up part of my base. I had to switch to peaceful just to collect my stuff and run.
I think I'm going to have to build a stone cover for my Nether paths. If the rate they were shelling me was normal, pretty soon all that will be left is my walkway - all the Netherrack around it will be destroyed.
There have been 3 other changes made to my world with the new release:
Water now washes away signs. This breaks my mob farm, so I'll have to rework that (again)
My underwater railway no longer has powered rails - I'll need to go in and add redstone torches under each of those to restore power.
My water elevator no longer works. Apparently something happened to the hitbox so that I can't get lift any more. I don't know if it's fixed completely or just rotated to a different corner.
And here's a screenshot of the protection I'm adding to my paths in the Nether against Ghast Blasts:
Did you know that farmer villagers can plant and harvest crops so you can use them to your advantage like they plant and you harvest.
Yep! That's why I built and rebuilt the farm in the village, so that I could get a design they could go in and maintain for me, without damaging the crops a lot and requiring many re-hoes.
Just a quick work update:
* The underwater railway has been re-powered.
* The Nether path protection has been extended, but not yet completed.
* Magma cubes are showing up - I've killed one of them and gotten some Magma Cream
* I've fixed my mob spawner a bit, although I think I may need to fix it again. To hit the mobs, I'm standing too far from the skeleton spawner for them to spawn.
The Nether path protection is finished now. It doesn't cover 100% of the path, and when I tested it out this morning, I was still able to get hit by a ghast blast, but I think it's perfect. I can see and shoot out, I have sections I can take cover in, and I can step out of it all along the path. Yeah, and a little danger will keep me on my toes.
I'm not sure why this idea leaped into my head, but I've begun work on a village at the bottom of the ocean. It's not going to be like Riverbottom in my Arkel, where I just glassed in the floor of the river and excavated under it. This one will be about a half-dozen houses located at the deepest part of the ocean, connected by airy lit walkways. I don't have anything to show for it yet - I'm not doing anything spectacular like draining a hole in the ocean like I did for my house. I tunneled out into the middle of it and dug upward until I found water, then started constructing a dirt box to hold the water back. So all there is to see is a dirt, cobblestone and gravel cube with a ladder leading to the roof and a redstone lamp. I haven't finalized any of the designs in my head yet - I'm wanting to use redstone lamps and switches for light (because we have them and they must be used!) and I'm trying to figure the necessary circuits in my head without risking them getting hit by water and washing away in the process.
When I'm done I might actually use Creative mode to pop a few villagers into it for fun.
By the way, as a side note, collecting glowstone in Survival mode with mobs on is very nerve-wracking. I kept spinning about looking for ghasts.
Nope. Never happened. Sorry.
