I've long been a desktop version loyalist, but with the 0.12 update, PE has caught up enough that I feel like I can really enjoy it. That's great, because my brother is about 2,000 miles away and pretty much only plays PE, and we've been wanting to be able to share a world for a long time.
Finding that PocketMine still needs some polishing for 0.12, I decided to pay for an extra Win10Edition account that I could leave running at my shop (with a dedicated IP and proper port forwarding, running on the same computer that I run my MC desktop server on) all the time, and just have that player hide in some corner, letting my brother, myself, and anyone else we invite to be able to log in anytime.
It works! For a while, that is. The computer gets locked (game still running, not in hibernate or sleep mode). I've locked the computer while we were logged in, and we didn't get booted, but when we go back to hop on the server an hour or two later, it won't let us on. I go unlock the computer, and the game is still running, no obvious issues, and it will once again let us on.
Does anyone know if this is an issue of non-movement of the host character, or is it an issue of the account being locked? Anyone know? I've confirmed that the desktop server is still functioning, so it's not an issue of the computer being off, asleep, or logged out.
Confirmed - as soon as I went back to my shop & logged into the server, I was able to connect both with Win10 on my laptop and regular MCPE on my Android phone. I'm setting up remote desktop so I can at least wake it up on demand, but I need to find a way to keep it awake and active.
The more I try to solve issues, the more come up it seems. Regular PE will no longer connect (my brother on iOS nor me on Android) unless on the local network. For Android, I get a "make sure you're connected to the internet" message. I can, however, tether my laptop through my phone's 4G and connect. Well, I used to be able to, but now I get a "Server is full" message, when the only player on the server is the host account. I also get that message now from my laptop on the local server if I click on the IP address connection. It will, however, see the server on the local network and list it as another server option for a more direct connection, and that works.
Are you using PocketMine or a 3rd copy of Pocket Edition for Windows 10?
If you're using pocketmine, try using a different port. I myself switched from the 19132 to 13152 due to the fact that on bleeding #23 of pocketmine, the standard port has issues.
If you're using a 3rd copy of Pocket Edition for Windows 10, then it's due to the minecraft account being inactive ie not moving, etc.
Just like normal minecraft for PC, it has a feature both online and in single player to "lock up" to help save memory on your computer/device to allow other tasks to take place. To avoid this, just get pocketmine since realms is not currently out for MCPE, and any other app out there such as MCPE-MP for android and iOS lag and are crap apps and leet.cc charges for everything (yet it uses pocketmine).
If I'm not mistaken, pocketmine doesn't really play nice with 0.12.1 yet (bugs, missing features). I tried to set it up at one point, and had no luck.
As someone who is currently hosting a server for anyone who wants to
join, as well as 2 other servers for other people in the community (I'm a
free 0.12.X server host) I can see where you're coming from as far as
bugs and stuff go with pocketmine. I've been keeping up with them and
their latest builds, providing feedback and such. Pretty much working
with them and being their testing ground in a way.
Anyway,
that being said, then it's as I stated above. Minecraft PE, just like
Minecraft PC, has an "autokick" feature both in multiplayer and single
player. Again, this is to avoid using too much memory on your device or
pc. This is what's probably causing your server to go offline. Best thing you can do is wait till pocketmine is stable, or just have him get onto the PC version. I know there's an appeal to PE, however the PC version does have more features. He might enjoy the PC version more.
I appreciate the reply/info. Sounds like I'll be waiting on PocketMine. At least I can still get use out of my extra Win10Ed account by getting my wife to play with us.
I've been trying for a long time to get my brother to play desktop, and we have played multiplayer together when he has a chance. That's been a whopping 2 times in 3-4 years. When he has played, it's been on a really old Mac mini that struggles to keep up with vanilla Minecraft, so he gets a little frustrated about that, too. He plays PE regularly because he has kids, and can play while sitting on the couch with them while they watch tv, or whatever. We may still not get to play a lot together at the same time, but we will at least be able to build in the same world & check out each other's projects.
What's the best way to know when PocketMine is stable for 0.12.1?
Although the best way would be to keep an eye out here: http://jenkins.pocketmine.net/job/PocketMine-MP-Bleeding/
Those are the .phar files. The .phar files are basically minecraft pocket edition server files. In otherwords, they are what the pocketmine servers use in order for you to play online on the same release. So by watching those, you will know when it starts getting closer to the actual stable release. Although they say stable releases on them from time to time, they aren't. They are stable dev builds, not stable public builds. If you'de like though, I have a server that I run on my PC 24/7 so I can send you the info on it. It's a bit buggy but it works none the less.
@dlcoates1 - I'm new to this whole hosting a server thing (well, aside from the basic local wifi one that comes with the game). I'd love to set up a 24/7 hosted site by buying the pe version on my laptop at home and leaving it on all day. Do you happen to have instructions on how I can get it done? I had found a good video on youtube but it was using a local ip address instead of an external ip. How do I go about creating an external ip to access anywhere in the world?.............or can I just pay u $5 a month to host one for me? lol

3 ways to keep your server live on win10 for server hosting like what i've done,
1) Build a script, and run that script at set intervals (move mouse script) and set its auto run with task scheduler
2) Use a automated application that Controls applications and or moves in it for you
3) {Most not suggested method ever}, remotely ping in with your device using remote desktop software, microsofts built in rpc protocol (Or a 3rd party remote control application IE: Team Viewer, etc...)
The rest is getting domain name, or a consistent IP, i suggest you talk to your internet provider via phone, than over the web based text chat, and ask them about a dedicated IP for hosting a small scale server (this will jack up your ISP cost) but for a dedicated IP, you dont half to worry about your IP changing, then a DNS translator to give you a web url (IE: ???.???.???) like for example us.supernet2.co or something of the sort (well in my case lmao i just dont feel like paying to own a domain name and setting up the forwarding of the services for my ip)
Really thats it. Just proper port configuration, a win10 license (or running it on a VM environment), and a legal copy of minecraft win10 and your set, oh and theirs no way to remove the host profile yet... legitly, their is a mod that increases # of players though.
