You look for a good server to go on, for example: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1838851-buildcraft-new-server-for-realms/. Next you ask to go onto the whitelist. Then when you are on the whitelist you join. (There is no realms without a whitelist since Mojang didn't add that feature).
