I think you are talking about the mod Tinker's Construct. If so, to make iron, gold, cobalt, ardite, and alloy tools you will need a smeltery. To make one craft a clay ball with a piece of sand and a piece of gravel. That will get you two pieces of grout. Smelt the grout and you will get a book called mighty smelting when you take the seared bricks out of the furnace. Use that book as your guide.

(I have built the furnace, partbuilder, tool station and stencil table, I have also built a flint axe)
