Can I suggest that you change the texture to 0.11.1 format, Then add new sides / top which you can toggle between to show that the box is operating? If you would like, I can convert the texture pack for you and give you the code that will allow the toggling.
Then you do not need to use the pop-up messaging to indicate that the process is complete. With your GUI, you would also be able to eliminate the "wrong block type" message.
I voted for the GUI update, as it would be nice to be able to toss in a STACK of coal and get a few diamonds out.
Once you can get the stack to convert, I think you can use some math to calculate tweak how many diamonds should come from a stack of coal blocks.
To compress your coal simply tap on the Diamond compressor with a block of coal, wait 20 seconds, then tap the block again to get your diamond!

according to:
http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/09/diamonds-are-not-formed-from-coal/
It is not coal that gets you a diamond, it is the carbon in the coal.
According to:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal
60-90% of the coal is carbon. So, pick something in the middle, 75%, That is by mass.
from:
http://www.aqua-calc.com/calculate/volume-to-weight/substance/diamond
300cc of diamond is equal to 1.05 kilogram of diamonds
Since 75% of a "coal" is carbon - by mass and a PURE diamond is PURE carbon,
1.05kg of diamond is equal to (1.05/.75) 1.4 kilogram of coal - by mass (also assuming 100% efficiency and purity not taken into account)
From: http://www.aqua-calc.com/calculate/weight-to-volume/substance/coal
1.4 kilogram of coal is equal to: 1040.12cc
So, that gives us roughly 1:3 ratio of coal chunks to diamond chunks.
That means for every coal block, you should get 3 diamonds out (using REAL world numbers)
----------
If instead you wanted to use Minecraft numbers:
From:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/discussion/133225-diamonds-are-not-rare
You see a proportion of:
Gold Ore: 17775
Iron Ore: 163796
Coal Ore: 336905
Diamond Ore: 7111
Lapis Lazuli Ore: 6387
Redstone Ore: 58272
coal:diamond
336905:7111
or
for every 47 coal pieces, you get 1 diamond piece. Call it 45 for ease of math on a BLOCK of coal?
for every 5 BLOCKS of coal, you get 1 diamond
Just a suggestion and GREAT mod so far!
