There are 3rd party (non-mojang) tools that allow you to enter the seed used for a world or point to the level.dat file. They then create a surface map, which would be awesome in PE because there's no map
Examples (mostly for PC and waaaay earlier versions of PE) can be found at the link in the OP. The one I like the most is
Yes, you would need to get at the level.dat file with either jailbreaking or maybe with iExplore or some such program. Unless there's a tool (which could be either a PC tool or iOS) which uses the seeds (instead of game saves) and generates the map from the MCPE binaries (or loads the libraries itself to generate the map). I was looking for even a hint of where I am compared to my base (which I can find if I'm close enough). Going the extra mile and identifying strongholds / spawners / villages, well, that would have been icing!
But I didn't know of any tool for MCPE that generates even the terrain (biome locations)... maybe someone was interested in doing it just to do it. I was hoping, anyway
And still quite alive after the explanation, many thanks!
