Yeah, start up a world and grab some dirt. Or if you have dirt in a chest, take one piece out so it is in your inventory. You can replace that with diamonds

You can't add slots, I tried to do that, but I haven't found a pattern

Also, where do you put the level.dat file? Where everything else is right?

Actually, I have never seen that error.

What operating system are you on?

Also, try installing what you have to

And to answer the last question, yes, you put it in the folder you used to start the program
