If it is just saying that message there is no problem.
EDIT: To start the crafting you need to have a CHEST (empty) on top of a block of STONE. Next put 4 Cobblestone In the First slot (has to be in this order) and 4 quartz in the second slot. Now tap the stone block under the chest.

Update: Today I removed the Hopper block mod and renamed more blocks to 1.8 blocks. Be expecting more updates soon. Also I want to talk to some GOOD committed modder to take BloomeryCraft Off my hands. I have very little time to mod now. So just shoot me a pm and we'll talk there.

Currently in BL if you add custom blocks in the creative inventory then It will result in a crash. Try using TMI or SPC to set the items. The ids are 200-205
Use TooManyItems or SinglePlayerCommands, SPC has a /setitem command which sets the current item in your hand to the id you choose. Same with Toomanyitems but ib creative.

Grinder:
Grinder is set up like this

the chests go on top and on bottom. They have to be empty. To grind dust only the first slot of the input chest (top) will work. Put the ore (or ingot) there, tap the grinder and it will have dust in the output chest (bottom) WARNING Dust will stack farther than 64, DO NOT break the chest with any dust in it. You might crash.

-1 dust -> 1ingot
-diamond dust > diamond
-iron dust > iron ingot
-gold dust > gold ingot
-tin, copper, steel dust > ingot
Tin, copper, silver ore > 1 ingot
Grinder recipes:
