Well replacing dirt blocks to netherack and water to lava is already a simple step that serves as the base to the Nether Project as I would like to call it. I wish I could help with coding but I'm not taking coding classes until the summer. All I know is some JavaScript, HTML, and a little bit of self-taught C++ but only basic commands. The most complex program I created was a simple math game with randomly generated equations.
I actually think that the portal will be the hardest part of the project. After that is the PC-like generation of the Nether. And possibly Zombie Pigman natural spawning.

Oh OK. I thought someone already got the source or at least most of it. But I guess someone could try it with PocketMineMP because I'm pretty sure you could get that working, although it would be pretty hard. But I think the basis of the Nether Project should be to make new worlds automatically be the nether. Not the landforms but just the block ids. That will at least be a good starting point. Who was the guy who made the Drether again?
And I was also wondering if the terrain generator (in terms of landforms) was able to be decompiled. If so, than that would be great!
Why not to have 1 world open, and when hitting a block( like the nether reactor core) , give commands to open another saved world, and close the last. Maybe to still having the items and life and armor they should share the player.dat

The problems with the nether reactor core taking you to the nether in my opinion are that you can access it in your world files in that case. Also , how would you get back to the over world? Also, if they are both actually separate worlds, then you can access them both individually in the world select screen. With that, you can't get different mob spawning and terrain generation if they are both regular world saves.
why can't you guys make a terrain option that copies the things in your inventory and transports them into a nether world save ohh and you probably could make a redstone ore block that when updated closes one world save and opens another newly generated one aka a nether portal! which would be an unlock!
Couldn't you just make it so if you taped something like a redstone oar it just changes the terrain data to a nether terrain and the same back to the normal world so you wouldn't have to open 2 saved files? So it just updating the world and you would still have everything.
When you beat the nether reactor (And you clean out your invintory from all the crap in it) A portal spawns on top of the reactor. And dont tell us its not possible people, it makes some people sad :(.
