I had just updated to 0.9.0 and I created a new world. I had made a pretty decent house with a bunch of stuff from mining aka diamonds gold etc. anyways I wondered away with some supplies to find some sheep to sheer. And now I'm lost. I was trying to make a compass but my pick axe got used up and I didn't find anything. I tried to go on a different device to mine to try and find me with a compass and that didn't work. I even tried dying to get back to my original span point but it would spawn me into some void and even if I got out of it without dying AGAIN, I would end up in the same spot. I really don't want to start over. Please help!!!
On MCPE you can have people play multiplayer with you through the Local Server Multiplayer feature in the options. Turn it on, then give your device's IP (found by Googling "what's my ip" or going to whatsmyip.com on your device) to whomever you want to join you in your world. I know, "Local" might cause you think of a local network, and maybe it's supposed to. But this is how my nephew, niece and I play on my world while they're over at my sister's house but I am at mine.
Your IP is then added to their server list the same way you'd add a proper server, via the "Edit" button on your world maps list in MCPE.
Be wary of who you give your IP to though, of course.
To answer your question, make a compass. Four iron and a redstone. No pick? Punch some trees, make some planks, turn those into sticks, two sticks and three planks makes a pick; break some stone, two sticks and three cobble makes a stone pick; mine some iron, mine some redstone, smelt said iron, put em all together for a compass.
The compass when viewed in your hotbar will show you in what direction the world's spawn point lies (it's not a TRUE cardinal direction compass since it doesn't actually point out north, south, east and west, but rather where your spawn is).
I know this isn't the perfect solution if you built your base away from spawn, but it should get you a lot closer to it than you are now.
Don't give up, don't make a new map, and stop dying! You're losing all of your stuff! Make a compass, follow it.
For future endeavors I find four things handy:
Make a compass and venture out in one direction relative to the compass. Go only in that direction. To find your way back, just go in the opposite direction.
Put torches down as you explore. One about every 50 blocks or so makes an easy path to follow back home. The trouble with this is that if you circle around on yourself, then you're not sure which direction you should be following the torches back home.
Also, they're hard to see by day, and you have to compensate for the rise and fall of terrain; it's hard to see a torch on the other side of a hill. Of course you could place them down in a V shape pointing home or accompanying them with a sign, but that's a lot of wood (although signs are good friends to have for when you find something interesting but have either not enough inventory space or tools to access whatever it is you've found). So that brings me to:
Obelisks. A very tall pillar of whatever material is readily available. These can be seen from very far away (your view distance, to be precise), so you don't have to place them so near each other. You can also affix torches to three sides (plus the top for higher visibility) leaving the fourth side blank to point home. You can also put signs on them near the bottom to point out directions to different areas like biomes, bases, farms, or that cave with all of the lava pools and diamonds.
Make your own map. Get a piece of paper and trace out your route on it. Note unique landscape formations or other landmarks in relation to a predesignated north. Remember: the sun sets in the west ("sets" and "west" rhyme kind of; moreso than "east" and "rises" anyway), north is to the right when facing west, and your compass doesn't always point north (unless you're directly south of your map's spawn). The sun is every man's compass because it always follows the same east-to-west path in the sky; irl and in MC.
Hopefully these things will help you navigate Minecraft better. I've only been playing in infinite worlds MC since it came out a few days ago (my computer can't handle MC, so I have to settle with my Tab 3). These are just basic irl navigation principles applied to the video game.
Best of luck to ya. And if you can't find your way back, just enjoy the journey!
This probably sounds sorta stupid but I saw the external button but I don't know how to use it I'm guessing it's something to play with other players.. Also I don't know what to put it for an ip or anything sooo.
PeanutButter hit it pretty spot on, however if you are aware of MCedit, you can import your world there and zoom out until you see your base. After that, add a block that points to the direction you need to head and you will be set. This may be an easier solution if you know how to work the program. If not, a compass is your best bet.
I'm having the same trouble and I have tried everything. I have tried digging all the way down and killing myself to find my original spawn point. Once I'm at my original spawn point I explore around to see if I can find my hOuse (nada). I'm in creative mode in PE and I've flown all the way around the world to no avail. I really need help, my house was awesome....
If you're on Minecraft PE on iOS, and you've lost home, it's actually quite simple to find your way back (wish I'd known this before flying search patterns for hours on end). This does rely on your home being at (or close to at least) the place where you originally spawned.
You've got 2 options, the 1st is the quickest, the 2nd is more scenic:
1. Die - and you'll respawn back at the original point (don't worry, it won't affect anything you've already built). The quickest way to die on PE (that I'm aware of) is to start digging a hole, just keep digging until you basically come out the other side - as soon as you see daylight again at the bottom, you'll fall out and die. Voila! You'll respawn back where you started.
2. Use a compass - if you select a compass from your menu, so it's on the bottom of the screen, you basically follow the direction of the red needle. This will eventually guide you on a straight line back to your original spawn point.
Hope that advice is of use to someone, god knows it'd have saved me some time!
Just wanted to say thank you for your help on this! My older son made a big building and my younger son had walked away from the building and was lost... Finding the building with these suggestions was very helpful!

I'm pretty sure that the present version of mcedit doesn't support LevelDB, which is the new file format mcpe worlds are saved in.
As for multiplayer, get a friend with mcpe, turn on local server multiplayer in the settings, and then turn on personal wifi hotspot on on your device.
Once your friend connects to your network, he/she should be able to enter your world.
Try to retrace your steps to where your player is while leaving torches behind to keep track of your movements.
Even if you don't have coal, start cutting trees up with axes and make charcoal, although if you're on the diamond+gold house stage I doubt you'll need that advice.
I'm also lost in my Minecraft PE, I have a compass and I'm still lost (I have a really bad sense of direction even in real life oTL). I can't find my torch path and I seem to be running in mountains I haven't explored yet. I searched that you can't make an empty map on PE yet. Any other tips?
This happenes everyday... i get emails everyday that somone is stuck and they cant find their house... I have to join by using the external server button.
Did you have a house? if you did then look a little more than build a new one thats all I have
I have 3 houses in that PE map and I'm still lost far, far away in the mountains. Not a single landmark was in sight, just rivers and stuff. Decided to make another world instead (but still saved the old map for reference!)
I know this is really old but to anyone that has this same problem, you can get inventory edit for MCPE in the play store and give yourself a compass to find your way home, that's the best you can do until they add maps to MCPE.
First thing get pocket editor pro for free on aptiode the app then open pocket editor pro tap on the world u want to edit tap on edit world info then if u built the house relatively close to the original spawn point tap on move player type in the coordinates X:75 Z:75 Y:not important.this should take u back to the original spawnpoint once u find ur house go back to the title and go to pocket editor then go back to the world in pocket editor tap edit world info tap move spawn to player location next time u get lost kill urself and u will spawn near or in ur house or use pocket editor to edit the world info and u could spawn urself to what ever spawn location u set
I know what to do. When a person enters your world they will teleport to the place where you wanna be. On the update when you dig straight down you will not die. And you will see all the bottom of the world. Ask the other person to build a big stack of glows tone going down from where they are so that when you go down you will know where to go.
This might not be the best answer,or the one you would like. But this problem somewhat happened to me countless times ( I would go away and not track or bring a compass). But each time I just looked for an easy and deep cave ( for redstone and iron) and set up a VERY small base. I also had friends join and come look for me. If you do have friends looking, set up a tall pillar of dirt or something on the top of the tallest mountain that's within about a 50 block radius and have your friends bring a compass and look for a few minecraft days. If you don't have friend join just mine. But keep in mind that you might not want to take multiple trips so I suggest throwing away extra stacks of cobble or the one flower you might have in you inventory for no reason. Mine until you find enough redstone and iron and make a compass. I would take months to get back to base (in real time, it stunk) but if you find a good enough cave i would guess that It would take about a week to get the supplies. Anyways sorry the explanation is long, but I hope it helps.

p.s this only works in creative
I don't know if this helps but infinite worlds never end they just render new land.
If you are using android search "minecraft spawn point coordinates"
than a block launcher or something to get you commands.
if you have found the coordinates online, Go into your game and type /tp X:___ Y:____ Z:_____
I could be wrong but it's always good to give it a try
