Nope, why I hacked in a diamond sword too. What's strange is that I live in a huge castle, it isn't that well lit though, yet at night, no zombie even spawns inside the castle walls, even though I didn't bother to light some areas, so I really dont know.
A torch lights up I believe a 12x12 radius, thus preventing any zombies from spawning.
They only spawn at night, regardless of whether or not they are in a pitch black cave, only at night.
Put a torch every 6 blocks in each direction and your zombie problems will vanish.
Or, use half-blocks for flooring. They cannot spawn on those.
But remember, torches light a 12x12 area. But zombies can spawn at a certain light level. Not sure what it is...
I once built a castle. (sadly, got deleted when I updated iOS...) and the surrounding area was crawling with zombies. So I dashed around, built a large fence. Hoping it would keep them out. I didn't. So I researched into their spawn behaviour and found that torches give off a certain amount of light. So I put torches every 6-8 blocks and no zombies spawned! Even on dirt!
So, yeah. Ensure EVERY inch is lit. Even just one block below the light intensity can be a spawn point.
well it is more of a 5 by 5 area even though it seems bright they can still spawn
Zombies, according to what I can find in the app's code, spawn where ever there is "level 7 or lower" darkness (think of pitch black as 0 and daylight as 15). There are no references to time of day at all. The most zombies that can spawn at once is no more than 26 to 30. Zombies can not also spawn within 30 or 40 blocks of the player.
