You don't need any more pickaxes, but you're getting them anyways.
I hadn't played Minecraft in a while and decided to check in again when the 1.9 update was released. I got pretty frustrated at how quickly wood and stone picks were getting used up, and I wanted to be able to make a better tool by using more efficient materials rather than rarer or more expensive ones. So I had the idea to make picks out of logs, and that sprouted into this mod. All of the textures for the picks are vanilla textures smashed together.
This is my first full-fledged mod. I have one other idea for a mod, but it's waaay more extensive in scope and will take a stupid amount of time to learn if I choose to pursue it. However, I will be adding to this mod as I feel like it and if I get requests. (MoreAxes? MoreShovels? MoreHoes? More... I dunno, armor? Leave a comment.)
I made version 1.0 of this mod in the course of about 6 hours while watching MrCrayfish tutorials on how to mod Minecraft. He's a bit awkward, but he does get around to telling you everything you need to know. Here's his channel.
Here's another shout-out, this time to Neale Gaming for going more in-depth towards the possible additions to the game. His 1.7.2 series covers a lot of content, and he's starting to re-make it for 1.8.9. He helped me to get the Obsidian Forge bug-fixed, so give him a sub and a few likes for being awesome!
Picks Added:
The wooden pick has 60 durability, so each plank counts for 20. 3 logs is 12 planks, which makes 240 durability. (11 less than an iron pick). Each vanilla log is recreated as a pickaxe.
The (non-polished) andesite, diorite, and granite pickaxes have the same stats as the vanilla stone pick.
1 stone pick is 132 durability, so each cobblestone is 44 durability. Now, smooth stone and cobblestone have an equal ratio, so I can't do the same trick as before. Instead I took the most common fuel source, coal, and added the time in seconds that it can cook for each stone. 44 + 80 is 124, so 372 durability total. This calculation applies for the smooth stone pickaxe and the polished versions of andesite, diorite, and granite.
The Ornate Stone Pickaxe (made from chiseled stone bricks) took the 372 value and added onto it. To get chiseled bricks from smooth stone, you need to craft 4 in a grid, then 3 bricks across to make slabs, then 2 slabs together. So 124 (per smooth stone) + 4 + 3 + 2 makes 133, which makes... 399 total durability. So I made it an even 400 instead.
The ObsidianPickaxe has a bit more of a complex crafting system, explained in full in this album of images: http://imgur.com/a/Ocfa8 This pickaxe has the same stats as a diamond one except it has double the durability, 3,124.
According to the Mohs hardness scale, gold is rank 3, iron is 4, lapis lazuli is 5, emerald is 8, and diamonds are 10. So by association, an Emerald Pickaxe should be a little bit less durable than diamond. However, emeralds are much rarer if you haven't found a villager with an exploitable trade, so there needs to be a reason to use your emeralds. Thus, the emerald pickaxe has a durability of 1,248(which is the durability of diamond times 8/10) but breaks blocks twice as fast. (Gold tool efficiency is 12, emerald is 16). To make the emerald pickaxe, you need to make its associated crafting table, which has a fairly simple recipe once you have a source of emeralds: http://imgur.com/a/plVeo
The previous link will also explain how to make the Lapis Lazuli Pickaxe. It's durability is 780 (durability of diamond times 5/10) and breaks blocks as fast as gold.
Old versions are not publically released anymore. PM me if you want one of the old versions, and explain why.
Changelog:
Version 1.4b:
- Fixed a small problem with the Obsidian Forge. You previously could not shift+click any of the new obsidian items into the input slot, and could with vanilla recipe items. Those two things have been switch, so you can more easily smelt the items to make the new Obsidian Pickaxe by shift+clicking.
Version 1.4:
- Retextured and changed the recipe for Emerald Crafting Table
- Added the Lapis Lazuli Pickaxe
Version 1.3:
- Added the Emerald Crafting Table
- Added the Emerald Pickaxe
Version 1.2b:
- Added the Obsidian Forge
- Changed the smelting process for Polished Obsidian and the Obsidian Pickaxe head to require the Obsidian Forge
Version 1.2a:
- Added Compressed and Polished Obsidian
- Added Unfired and plain Obsidian Pickaxe head
- Added Obsidian Pickaxe
Version 1.1:
- Added Ornate Stone Pickaxe
- Added Andesite, Diorite, and Granite Pickaxes (and their polished forms)
- Removed the horrible creative tab background
Version 1.0:
- Added Smooth Stone Pickaxe
- Added Acacia, Birch, Dark Oak, Jungle, Oak, and Spruce Log Pickaxes

Version 1.1 will be coming soon. Adding carved stone brick, andesite, diorite, and granite (and their polished versions) picks. Getting rid of the ugly creative tab background.
Before I venture out into potentially other tools, I want to finish up pickaxes. I'm thinking about obsidian picks, but not made in the traditional sense. Obtaining obsidian is pretty easy once you have a diamond pick, so I might create some unique obsidian blocks that you need to create in order to make an obsidian pick.

You don't need more pickaxes, but you're getting them anyways.
Hey guys, I'm at a bit of a stand-still. I'm trying to figure out how to elongate the amount of time it takes for an item to smelt. Usually fuel sources will determine how many items can be smelted, which works fine if everything takes the same amount of time. But I want an item to take the full duration of a coal block to smelt, and I can't figure out how to do that. Anyone have suggestions?

You don't need more pickaxes, but you're getting them anyways.
I decided to release what I have at the moment. Version 1.2a has all the features implemented, but the smelting process is not what I'd like. If anyone knows how to make an item's smelting duration longer (the length of a block of coal, for example), please speak up!
EDIT: Woops, the new blocks were breakable in 1 hit by anything. Changed them to have the same statistics as normal obsidian.
Yeah so, it turns out that the vanilla furnace is hardcoded to smelt everything at 200 ticks. If I want to elongate the smelting process, I'm going to need to make a custom furnace. I don't mind adding something in like that (perhaps an Obsidian Forge? if this mod does expand to other tools, it can be used for obsidian versions of those tools, too.), but I'd prefer to find another way. Anyone have any suggestions?
1.8, it says in the topic. It was made with the most up-to-date version of Forge for 1.8 as well. Theoretically it should work from 1.8 to 1.8.9, but I've not tested that.
EDIT: Tested it in 1.8.9, it doesn't work. If enough people want it to be compatible with 1.8.9, I'll take a look into it. Otherwise I'm not going to bother until I'm done adding content.
So.. does the entirely-too-long-of-a-creation-process pick mine any faster than diamond?
It should mine at the same speed, but has double the durability. Obsidian isn't nearly as rare as diamond, and is technically a softer material if Mohs scale of hardness is anything to consider, so I didn't want it to be too much better. But a durability of 3,500ish is pretty good considering most picks in the game are less than 400. Once you get to the point of making obsidian picks, it should be easier to make the obsidian pickaxe head than it is to find diamonds.
Hey guys, not sure when 1.2b will be coming out. Turns out making a new furnace is a lot more complicated than adding items or blocks -- I'm learning the code as I write this mod. I've got a lot of college work to do over the next few days, which cuts out my modding time. Hopefully I'll get something out Wednesday night or sometime on Thursday.

The keen eye may notice that the page's been updated with information about 1.2b, but the update is not released yet. I've almost gotten the Obsidian Forge done, I'm still stuck on one small, itty bitty bug that needs to be ironed out. (Being that nothing actually smelts in the silly thing.) Once I fish out snags, I'll publish another update.
On a side note, 1.2a jumped from 2 to 52 downloads overnight! That's great, glad to see people are starting to take interest If you've played around with the mod so far, feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think! I'm open to suggestions.

It's always fun to see your content posted on another site by someone else. For some reason http://www.minecraftmods.com/more-picks/ exists, and I didn't create that page nor give the owners permission to rehost my mod. If you're seeing this and would like to do so, please get in contact with me first! I won't say no outright.
Well I messed around with the download links and now they won't work. Sigh. I've got some more work I need to do, I'll come back later and sort out the problems.
So I've temporarily fixed the re-hosting problem and the new download link. For now, I'm going to delete the link to previous versions. If you want them, send me a PM explaining why, otherwise I'm not making them publicly available - just to be on the safe side. If I update to a newer version of Minecraft (which I might, since 1.8 mods don't run on forge for 1.8.9), I'll include the latest version for 1.8, etc. Otherwise, the downloads page is shortened to 1 link.
EDIT: Of course within a day of fixing that, it's been rehosted to http://minecraftfive.com/more-picks-mod/ . Why are these sites giving me better download rates than Minecraft Forum? That doesn't seem right, and is really lame. Time to fix this again.
So I think I'm going to update to 1.8.9 before fixing the forge. Nealegaming is helping me with it, and he's more fluent in 1.8.9 than base 1.8. Besides, I think more people use 1.8.9 by now, yeah?
EDIT: PFT, I guess not. Got it working sort of, at least with vanilla recipes. 1.2b will be coming soon.
Version 1.2b is out now, I'm happy to report! I'm really happy with the crafting process, even if I did have to make a new furnace. I'm happy with how it looks and functions, and I hope you guys enjoy the goodies brought by it.

I wanted to try adding a crafting table to the game, which is marginally easier than a furnace, so I thought up version 1.3 already! 1 new crafting table and 1 new pickaxe.

It gives that extra choice between 10 stone picks and 1 iron pick.
I'm quite a fan of consolidating inventory space, so I usually reach for the iron pick despite not wanting to waste the iron on it.
