All I see is yet another example of why I think most people have their displays set way, way, too bright, or why the game is completely broken when it comes to "darkness" (it should be totally pitch black, RGB(0,0,0). Do people seriously go caving without any torches at all, even in these older versions which were much darker? At the least, it has to slow down your progression (I've seen people saying I must spend like 6-12 hours a day playing, as if that is how much time is needed to mine thousands of ores, nope, just yesterday I mined 3277 ores in only 3 hours and 14 minutes, a rate of 1013 per hour, and being able to easily spot ores, as well as mobs and potential hazards, plays a big part in that):
A screenshot of a massive cave before I explored it, you certainly aren't going to be able to make out anything at all in the dark areas:
The cave after I explored it:
These screenshots were taken in a Creative copy, showing a spectator-like view of a 1.6.4-style cave system and the cave:
A rendering of the cave by itself and all caves in the area I explored:
The game output log for the day, the "session stats" line shows the number of resource blocks, ores, etc mined (2100 coal, 864 iron, etc) and mobs killed (590) and XP collected (7487):
That said, I don't see anything unusual about this, it just looks like what I find multiple times a day:
(the fact that the taskbar is completely whited out, yet the brightest pixels in the floor are still only 91, compared to the stone texture (for 1.6.4) at 143 (around 140 in-game since full brightness is about 98%), says all about just how much I increased the brightness and contrast, near the max for one operation. This also impacts visual quality since there are far less brightness values being used (out of only 256 possible values), e.g. the weird circular artifacts this person experienced, as opposed to the smooth gradient in normal lighting)
A chart comparing ore generation before and after Beta 1.8, which lowered the ranges of all ores by 4 layers, otherwise unchanged:
There was however a bug where ore veins were much smaller than intended in negative coordinates which was fixed in Beta 1.6, but this bug probably didn't affect the game until InfDev as there was no need for negative coordinates with a limited world size (this bug is almost certainly responsible for a misconception that ores used to be much rarer in old versions. Even with this bug diamond was still more common in caves in -x, -z than it is in versions like 1.6.4 since the lowered range approximately halved the amount exposed, of course, most people probably just branch-mine, I even do, and I average only 4-5 diamond ore per hour spent caving, if not comparable to the average player since I thoroughly explore everything, not just where rarer ores may be found, at the same time, the average player doesn't go caving with maxed-out gear):
Older versions aren't darker, at least not in minimum brightness scenarios where there is complete absence of light (such as this example deep within a cave). The differences between them are only when it comes to the presence of light, ironically. That's presuming the comparison is being done to the minimum or "moody" brightness for later versions though. The default value of the setting is indeed brighter.

Okay, good for you.
What's unusual about diamonds in that version? I don't know anything about very old versions.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
