That seems familiar for some reason. Isn't that a house a lot of people made at the time?
I would replace the cobblestone that makes up the foundation of the house (first floor walls) with stone bricks, presuming it's not too much of a chore to obtain in beta versions. I find vanilla's cobblestone to look pretty bad in large, uninterrupted amounts.
I would replace the cobblestone pillars holding the balcony up with logs.
I would take a different approach entirely to lighting. I tend to like torches on walls, never flat on the base of a surface. Why? I don't know. Maybe it's one of my things, but I never put torches on the ground. The top of a fence, mayyybe, but no, even then I'd use lanterns there. But those aren't available in beta.
The underside of the roof looks sad, but I don't think upside stairs existed yet.
the two sets of double doors that close together on the ground level seems unusual to me. I'd cut it down to one set of double doors and center it.
I'd probably consider adding a single chimney made of bricks. You might have to adjust one of the balconies on one side to do it, which may or may not make it appealing. I know bricks are harder to obtain in beta, but you won't need a massive amount of them for a chimney.
I'd also pen that sheep up, name him Vivi, and find him some friends. Then protect them at all costs.
This last one is more of a personal opinions rather than a suggestion to improve the house, but I would have picked a "Greener" area to build in because the pale beta grass feels depressing to me. If you don't mind the look/feel of the immediate environment, feel free to ignore me on this part.
...make the edge of the roof cobblestone rather than wood?
I'm surprised I didn't mention this, since it's something I usually do, but I probably forget it with everything else I suggested.
I would make it stone bricks, if the other suggestion I gave to replace the cobblestone foundation of the house with stone bricks is followed, but otherwise, yes I'd make it cobblestone. Make it match, basically.
Hello, I made a house in minecraft beta 1.7, but I think it looks kinda boring.. any build suggestions or tips? thank you
looks pretty good on its own, maybe a turret or a river flowing through it?

Thank you i will try to make it better. Also yes, it looks familiar because it is from the official minecraft build book
Good idea! i'll see what i can do
Is there stone slab in this version? Deck the outside with it for balance of dark/light colours.
I was not familiar with that, but that might explain why it seems common and why I saw it a lot back then.
