I've recently found my iron farm has stopped working after I've been quit for a while, which was originally built inside of the spawn chunks and worked when I was away.
Upon some testing, I've found that redstone only works in a 5x5 chunk square centred on the chunk with my spawnpoint. This is confusing, as everything I see online tells me the spawn chunks are 16x16 chunks, and it used to work for a larger distance back when I started playing.
Has there been a spawn chunk nerf recently, and if so, is there any way to increase the spawn chunks back to their original, 16x16 size?
Even before this many people used Optifine and one of the things it did was disable spawn chunks (toggleable), same for other optimization mods (I removed them years ago to reduce resource usage, and world load time when outside of the spawn area, initial generation is unaffected since the game has to generate chunks anyway).
Spawn Chunks Decreased in Size???

Yes, the spawn chunks are reduced as of 1.20.5.
I believe there's way to set the radius (maybe in world creation settings?) but I'm not sure what they are.
"'Tis foolishness! If all were so easy, why, none would suffer in this world!"
If you're having performance concerns with Minecraft, I hope this may prove useful.
A retrospective of the most important game to me (or, a try to stay awake while I never stop talking about something challenge).
You can use the gamerule spawnChunkRadius to change spawn chunks back to your desired size.
it changed back in 1.20.5, you can revert by using a command /gamerule spawnchunkradius 16
As of 1.21.9 spawn chunks no longer exist at all:

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
If you need the farm to operate while you are away, you may want to consider building a chunkloader.
Sorry for my English, I use Google Translate.
