Starting new world, I will typically look for a nearby hill and start digging into its side for resouces. The resulting space becomes my base. Building something means you need to gather materials first, and then use them up to build. Digging out a cave means you gain materials and shelter at same time. As needed, more rooms can be added with further excavation. Might add terraces, balconies etc. Dig to other side of hill. Maybe at some point add a structure on top of the hill.
Finding a small existing cave is even better - most digging already done, just need to tidy it up, add doors torches etc.
If there is a village close to spawn, I instead might look for a larger house in that village, and set up a base in there. Then add to the house as needed.
