Hi everyone. This thread is kind of like the one originally posted by manamedRICK, so go check out his thread too.
Let's face it. We all believed in and were scared of Herobrine as a kid. Over the years, the legend slowly faded away. I'm not saying that Herobrine is real, but i'm not saying that he's not. I have seen some scary things that appear unnatural in my single player worlds. I'm sure some of you have too.
But before we get deep into it, here's Herobrine's supposed backstory. It is believed that Herobrine is the ghost of Notch's brother who somehow found his way into the game. Notch later commented that he never had a brother, only a stepbrother that he never met, implying that said stepbrother might be deceased. In this case, it could be Notch's stepbrother, or something completly different. It is also possible that Herobrine is some sort of virus that is nestled into the games code. For years, Mojang officially removed Herobrine in every update. He kept coming back. That is, until recently when update logs no longer included removing Herobrine. Either what they did for the last time worked, or they simply coudn't beat him. So what we know so far, Notch, who made the game, says he doesn't exist, but the company that bought his game for 2.5 Billion US dollars said it did. It is said that Herobrine, once in your world, will do increasingly more violent things over time. First, maybe you'll find a pyramid in the middle of the ocean. Maybe you'll have see a random player head. If you haven't already deleted your world, you may eventually find a forest with no leaves, or a shrine sort of thing. In this case, it's time to get the heck out of dodge. If you wait too long, items will start to go missing, and you may have your first encounter. He stands there, stalking you, watching you. He may build lava pits or burn forests. He may build manmade 2x2 tunnels that you didn't make. Maybe all you'll see is a single redstone torch. Herobrine activity can range from mild to very, very severe.
My personal encounters and beliefs: I have seen redstone torches that i don't think i placed in the middle of caves. I also have seen forests burn down without and ignition source. It could be lightning, but there hadn't been rain in the world yet, as it was a new world. I have never seen the man myself, and I probably never will. In summary of my thread, I'm not saying Herobrine exists. I am also saying that I don't think Notch or Mojang is telling us the entire full truth. Thank you for reading this far, it really does mean a lot when other people see my work.
I've played Minecraft since the early Alpha days and have never come across Herobrine in any of my Singleplayer worlds. Not saying Herobrine doesn't exist but I've never experienced a run-in with him.
Side note: there are Herobrine mods out there. These would only exist (in my opinion) if the base game didn't include Herobrine as an NPC.
Herobrine has never existed in the official game, only as pranks and mods; I (and other modders) surely have come across its code by now if it did given just how extensively I've worked with it while making mods for nearly 9 years (by "mods" I mean old-school "jar" mods where you directly modify the game's code, rather than using an API like Forge, so everything is fully accessible, though even Forge/etc let you view the source). Not that I ever believed in it either or found anything remotely paranormal in any of my worlds (and even if you did it was just world corruption, particularly bugs like MC-315, which can cause chunks, including player builds, from a deleted world to appear in a newly created world; if it was multiplayer than it could have been anybody), and indeed my first experience hearing about them was probably a mod showcase so it was perfectly natural for me to assume it was just a mod and anything else a big conspiracy; "removed Herobrine" is just a joke on Mojang's part, one which they should have stopped doing long ago and made an official statement that it was never a thing.
Herobrine has never been real and never will be. Don't you think it's strange that with the millions of people who play the game every day and with many of them claiming to have seen Herobrine before, not a single one of them is able to take a clear screenshot or video of the encounter? You always get either a blurry picture/video, something that could have been easily Photoshopped, or them saying that they were so scared and immediately closed the game once they saw him (even though a "real" video would instantly go viral and get millions of views). Weird.
The easiest way to prove or disprove Herobrine's existence would be to take a look at the game's source code as many people have already done. There is no entity built into the game that stares at players from far away, digs 2x2 tunnels in caves near you, or places redstone torches in areas that you haven't visited. ALL videos on Youtube that claim to have "encountered" Herobrine are using mods or plugins to fool people for clicks/views. If you haven't encountered him yet, that just means that you haven't installed a Herobrine mod yet.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
(In response to atexii and TheMasterCaver)
Yes, unfortunatly these days there are a lot of mods and staged videos claiming to see different things, when it's just for the views in reality.
