this would take you not hours but months. You would have to dedicate to this for a very long time if you wanted to do this. It couldn't be shortend by doing this 24 hours a day, it would still take incredibly long.
If I'm reading the Wiki correctly the farlands started at 12,550,825 (with a very slight variation, just a few blocks.)
Walking at 4.317 m/s, assuming that hasn't changed since the farlands was a thing, that would take 2,907,302 seconds, If you could go in a straight line.
Or 48 450 minutes.
807 hours.
33 days.
Non stop, round the clock, actual results may vary.
And I could have miscalculated somewhere.
Detours wouldn't necessarily add much to that as long as you can move diagonally, keeping your forward speed the same, swimming is slower but boating faster, once again I don't know if that has changed.
How long do you suppose it would take to build a railroad?
Stopping to chop trees and mine iron, gold and redstone.
(Or mining in a straight line laying tracks in the mine.)
--
I'm guessing you wouldn't find 6 iron every 16 blocks just mining straight though and so would have to mine around.
Considering building tracks there would either require insane timing on flat land with no interruption or walking to the Far Lands before the track is finished, and either 750,000 or 4,500,000 iron (I don't know if I did the math right on either one) plus the time it takes to mine them all, I'd say it's not a feasible task. Ever.

If you'd like to talk with me about other games, here are a few I play.
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands series (Borderlands 2 is my favorite game, ever. TPS combat is a lot of fun and makes up for the lower-quality story, in my opinion)
Elder Scrolls series
Warframe (IGN is something like That_One_Flesh_Atronach)
Pokémon series (HGSS forever)
Rocket League
Fallout series
Left 4 Dead 2 (Boomer files always corrupt though)
SUPERHOT (SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years!)
Dead Rising series (Dead Rising 2 is one of my favorite games, and the 3rd was a lot of fun. 1st has poor survivor AI and the 4th is bad)
Just Cause series
Come to think of it, I mainly play fighting-based games.
Ok, I was the previous week a little bit lazy because of school so here is the new update: 25.7 km from spawn, 0.2% finished of the journey and a 150 mb world,
Considering building tracks there would either require insane timing on flat land with no interruption or walking to the Far Lands before the track is finished, and either 750,000 or 4,500,000 iron (I don't know if I did the math right on either one) plus the time it takes to mine them all, I'd say it's not a feasible task. Ever.
You'd need about 4.58 million iron (12551000 * 6/16 * 37/38, where 6/16 is the recipe in:out ratio and 37/38 is the normal:total rails ratio) and 330,000 gold (12551000 * 1/38), assuming you use 1 powered rail for every 37 normal rails, the optimum ratio for maintaining full speed on a straight level track. For comparison, I've collected about 626,000 iron over 151.5 days of playtime in my first world, most of which has been spent caving (when only counting time spent caving I average about 200 iron per hour, which still means that it would take me about 22,900 hours or 2.6 years to mine the required amount of iron. If you include rails from mineshafts, of which I've collected around 176,000, the time decreases by about 10%. Gold and redstone are used in much smaller amounts relative to what I find so iron is the limiting factor; if I used as many powered rails as I could there would be about one for every 24 normal rails, with a further slight decrease in the time required).
Of course, you could use farms to collect the resources but it would still take a while, probably longer than the 33.78 days it would take to walk with no interruptions (you'd need to average more than 5,600 iron per hour), plus the time needed to lay the track (optimistically, you could place them as fast as you can walk but you'd need to regularly restock your inventory and move items to your hot bar; remember that Beta 1.7.3 has no shulker boxes or even ender chests. Even with my own mod's "rail blocks", equivalent to 9 rails per block, you would need 295 shulker boxes to carry 4.58 million rails).
Also, for comparison, I've walked about 18,700 km in my first world, averaging about a third of your normal walking speed, so it is certainly possible to walk to the Far Lands, which are about 2/3 the distance, though this is by no means comparable to what one would average by intentionally walking to them (the maximum distance I've traveled from the origin is only about 3,300 blocks; most of this is while caving, followed by going to/from where I'm currently exploring and the nearest base, where I probably do average closer to your walking speed as I sprint most of the way, terrain permitting).

Yep, I figured I did the math wrong. It was the 6 iron to 16 rails conversion that really tripped me up. Thanks for clearing that up.

What version are you doing this in, are you walking towards an actual messed up "far lands" or just a world border?
Are you doing this in Survival?
If so what preparations have you made and what precautions are you taking to avoid being killed and respawning at spawn?
Just testing.

Would you like company, or would you prefer not?
I promise not to turn it into a contest though I can't promise I won't lose interest.
I could just follow your distances in the forum.
If you post the version and seed we could compare screenshots.
Or you could set up your world as a server, I'd be willing to donate a Realm (I still have the free trial for the first month) and we could build markers and perhaps run into each other occasionally (or I could try to match your times and progress).

No problem.
Good luck!
(I don't know if that is appropriate since it's a matter of perserverance, not luck but I hope you take it the right way.)
My inclination would be to leave the beds, stopping to shear sheep as needed rather than restoring a backup.
(It never hurts to take backups anyway.)
Just testing.
I do also take back-ups to prevent to lose my world if it crashs.
