Searching at night is easiest because their lights show up brightly.
In the fullscreen map in VoxelMap you can pick them out easily from their shape. I search all the oceans that way if I haven't found all of them visually.
In single player you can turn them on temporarily by opening the game to LAN if you didn't have the foresight to turn them on when starting the world. (Or if you didn't trust yourself to not abuse them.)
(And in multiplayer one might not have access to the seed.)
I've searched my entire ocean and haven't found 1. Are they guaranteed in every ocean as long as it's a deep ocean?
If you can find a village, a cartographer sells maps that may help u find one ...
