Recently, I've been playing on render distance 42, using OptiFine, of course. I really like this render distance because I can see the Twilight Watchtower on the western horizon from Castle Midgard. There's not a whole lot of difference between 42 and 32 otherwise.
My little i5-6500 can just barely do it, but not really with shaders. At 32 with shaders, it can only manage 15-25 FPS regularly. That's just not quite enough. Feels a bit too much like playing Doom 2.
Jumping from 32 to 42 means I'll often hit spikes below 60 FPS, but it's not really noticeable.

How about you try to set back the blocks in between the logs to add some depth? And then you can add pillars on the other side too, and connect them in the ceiling with slabs or logs, I think that would add more realism. That is all I can think of right now. I will post my own improvements in a week or so in my survival journal thread, you might get more ideas from me then

I haven't posted on here in a really long time, sad to see the forums aren't nearly as lively as they used to be. Where do people go for Minecraft community these days?
I've been working on a big wizard-ish tower in the ocean on my private server. It's running MC 1.8 with a few mods, most notably Chisels & Bits. I took a bunch of pictures since there's a lot to see. Currently it's at a standstill, not really sure what to do with it next besides farms for other things. Whenever I update to 1.13 I'll add an aquarium too, somewhere.
Views from the ocean surface as you approach. It was constructed with materials dug out of my original base on the server, which has an absurdly scoped digging project that's given me a TON of cobble and stone brick. I needed something to do with it so I built this.
The central pillar goes pretty far underground as well, to my farming area and what will become the mines.
Rather than making some boring old geometric, efficient farms, or taking the time to automate things like I'd done before to an extent, I decided to try repurposing natural caves into farms. I think it turned out well but I'd appreciate any ideas for how to do it better.
This is the first segment above the main pillar, which contains my main work/storage area, a library, an armory, and a Chisels & Bits chiselry. All of the paintings were made by me. I wish other people on the server made art... almost nobody plays as it is.
Not sure what to do with the upper levels. The second tier here is empty with passages to the side towers. The top floor is currently set up to be an art gallery, but I haven't put anything in it yet. It could easily become something else.
The side towers contain a mob dropper and tree farm. I prefer my lumber in bulk.
When I built my iron farm back in Minecraft Java 1.8, I had planned on making a fourth level down near bedrock, but the three levels (6 villages) above the surface worked so well I never added the lower villages. However, a reply in a recent thread got me thinking about the lower level, and feeling like my farm was never truly finished. So I decided to start working on it again (even though I don't actually need any more iron).
My SSP iron + gold farm built back in the Java Minecraft 1.8 series.
The 4 level (8 village) version from my test world with underwater villages.
I replaced the pigman/gold spawner with a creeper/gunpowder spawner in SSP 1.11.2 (for fireworks powered Elytra flight).
And yesterday I finally got around to adding the first of 2 underwater (underground) village golem spawners to my SSP world.
The 4 light pipes and item elevator reach up from near bedrock level to the surface.
Lower level with kill/collection chamber (nether portal provides access, and ladder leads up to villager pod level).
Item shooter pushes drops into the item elevator, which moves them up to the surface sorting and storage system.
Only 4 sky access blocks validate 40 doors below as houses. The trick is to place the doors sideways facing the corners.
5 each way in the corner keeps them all in range of the light pipe (10 doors per corner, 40 doors total).
The wrap around villager pod is a carrot farm so they can self breed from only 2 starter villagers (1 was farmer class).
Also, one villager is trapped in each corner to keep all doors validated (village is larger than 16 block detection range).
18x18 spawn floor covers the 16x16 spawn area, even with the funky directional shift that occurs in some quadrants.
There is another floor above for a total of 504 valid spawn blocks to hit more than 98% of golem spawn attempts.
With only 6 active villages this farm produced more iron than I have ever needed (and the creeper spawner, in spite of its small size, does the same for gunpowder). So adding this 7th (and eventually 8th) village is purely for the sake of "finishing" the farm, and giving me another project to do in this world.
My one reservation in making this change is that this farm has run flawlessly since the first six villages were completed back in the mid 1.8 series, because it didn't rely on any game glitches or exploits. It was designed using only basic game mechanics to keep running update after update, and it has done so from version 1.8.6(ish) all the way up to the current version 1.12.2. But now that I have added a block-glitch item elevator, it could break in a future update (like my Guardian farm did, several times).
Although with the significant changes to world generation in the upcoming version 1.13 "Update Aquatic" I will likely start a new world anyway...
MC Day 12544: Still plenty to do at my Ice Spikes base renovation, but I’ve always wondered what to do with a skeleton spawner I uncovered on the underground floor when I first started building here. I just left it lit up, but over the last week decided to use it as the supplier of a skeleton for a music disc farm. It required me to extend the plateau my base is situated on in the area above the spawner. I’ve added a trap door system to manually lure & drop creepers in to the holding pen, and an external underground access for me to the control area where I can stand so the skeleton tries to ping me and kills the creepers inbetween us. Hoppers in the kill area channel the drops to a chest in the control area.
I also wasn’t sure if I could “gift” the skeleton one of my more powerful bows, the first skeleton didn’t touch it, so I eliminated him, but the second one snapped it up, so he only takes a couple of hits to kill a creeper.

Well I built a very large village on my Bedrock Edition world, and I think it has about 90-100 villagers in it right now, (with 9 or 10 iron golems in it too)
however the villagers REALLY love to cram into each other which is a little annoying since only a couple of the houses get use, with about 80% of the villagers seeming to try to cram into a 4-door house at night!
Been playing in sheer survival unceasingly on Switch since last May, and I managed to put up a selection of different builds, as shown in the following images.
Recently I began to conclude the building work of one of the settlements by laying a series of wall around the perimeter of the town.
Fallout Inspired Currency For Spawning Villager Shops
I just finished a command for spawning a chest with 8 different custom shop villager spawn eggs that can be placed wherever you want to create a market. Dispense the chest to non-OP players on your server to create market places in their camps. Prices are set in the spawn eggs and can't be changed in-game. Currency types are "Bottle Caps", "Gold Teeth", and Diamonds.
Just found a double zombie spawner in my vanilla hard-mode SSP world that I've been playing since July 2, 2014. Thay are only six blocks apart and share the same Y-axis. One is at 83, 41, 940 and the other is 87, 41, 945.
I doubt I'll do anything with it. I have a massive gold farm and a skeleton spawner (as well as a zombie spawner and spider spawner) below my first and main base, Castle Midgard, only about 1 km away. The location is right beside a bridge and roadway I built in 2016, back before rocket-powered elytra made roads and bridges (and horses) obsolete.
I just saw a little cave while flying high overhead and investigated.

MC Day 12627: Completed the 4th area of my main floor at my Ice Spikes base renovation. The area I had left to do was a brewing area, and I decided to use Mumbo Jumbo’s splendid auto brewing station, which is rather long, but I just had enough room to fit it in with the changes I wanted (being able to brew splash potions of weakness was one thing). Decided to use green concrete for the base colour of this area, trying to use colours I wouldn’t normally go for, and in the end came out quite nicely. There is also a small manual brewing area as well.
The other side project I had was in the nether near my nether Minecart station of the Ice Spikes base, to rebuild an old inefficient Mumbo Jumbo blaze farm into a NimsTuts farm with an extended kill area because of the max entity cramming rule. Again I used concrete as the base colour, this time orange, which again was not a fave colour of mine. There are actually two encased blaze spawners close by each other, and the other is the standard NimsTuts farm with the single block kill area. But rather than try to extend that, I rebuilt the other which was never used anymore.

I have a zombie and skele spawner just barely in range of each other in my older world (started in 1.8), but they are at very different Y levels, which makes connecting them a bit tricky (and the sweet spot small). I also don't really need them in this late game stage of the world, but someday when I'm looking for something more to do in I'll get around to it. Right now only the skele spawner is an XP/drop farm. The zombie spawner was originally used to get villager zombies I could cure before they nerfed that (still bummed about that change, it was a useful game mechanic).
You should do something cool with those spawners. Even if you don't need them, it's a chance to do something creative and interesting.
I believe he's recently had his fourth anniversary, though I missed a post about it if he made one. I'm getting ready to have mine, and our worlds are similar in real-time age, his being a just tad bit older. His world is about twice mine's MC age, though. I'm on day 6,061 in my world, began July 2, 2014.

If only I had your creativity and ability, let alone your patience. My world is very primitive. I have a couple 2x3 XOR piston doors opened by lever on either side, a skeleton XP farm, an unfinished gold farm designed by Mr N, a good-sized castle, and that's about it. I'll put it on the list of things to do, but that list is already years long. Another reason I can't figure out how people have seed ADD or have threads like, "What should I do in MC?"
I also used a zombie spawner to make a curing station, and am still sore they changed that.

Just found a double zombie spawner in my vanilla hard-mode SSP world that I've been playing since July 2, 2014. Thay are only six blocks apart and share the same Y-axis. One is at 83, 41, 940 and the other is 87, 41, 945.
I doubt I'll do anything with it. I have a massive gold farm and a skeleton spawner (as well as a zombie spawner and spider spawner) below my first and main base, Castle Midgard, only about 1 km away. The location is right beside a bridge and roadway I built in 2016, back before rocket-powered elytra made roads and bridges (and horses) obsolete.

MC Day 12627: Completed the 4th area of my main floor at my Ice Spikes base renovation. The area I had left to do was a brewing area, and I decided to use Mumbo Jumbo’s splendid auto brewing station, which is rather long, but I just had enough room to fit it in with the changes I wanted (being able to brew splash potions of weakness was one thing). Decided to use green concrete for the base colour of this area, trying to use colours I wouldn’t normally go for, and in the end came out quite nicely. There is also a small manual brewing area as well.
The other side project I had was in the nether near my nether Minecart station of the Ice Spikes base, to rebuild an old inefficient Mumbo Jumbo blaze farm into a NimsTuts farm with an extended kill area because of the max entity cramming rule. Again I used concrete as the base colour, this time orange, which again was not a fave colour of mine. There are actually two encased blaze spawners close by each other, and the other is the standard NimsTuts farm with the single block kill area. But rather than try to extend that, I rebuilt the other which was never used anymore.

Nice. I have a zombie and skele spawner just barely in range of each other in my older world (started in 1.8), but they are at very different Y levels, which makes connecting them a bit tricky (and the sweet spot small). I also don't really need them in this late game stage of the world, but someday when I'm looking for something more to do in I'll get around to it. Right now only the skele spawner is an XP/drop farm. The zombie spawner was originally used to get villager zombies I could cure before they nerfed that (still bummed about that change, it was a useful game mechanic).
You should do something cool with those spawners. Even if you don't need them, it's a chance to do something creative and interesting.
I believe he's recently had his fourth anniversary, though I missed a post about it if he made one. I'm getting ready to have mine, and our worlds are similar in real-time age, his being a just tad bit older. His world is about twice mine's MC age, though. I'm on day 6,061 in my world, began July 2, 2014.
If only I had your creativity and ability, let alone your patience. My world is very primitive. I have a couple 2x3 XOR piston doors opened by lever on either side, a skeleton XP farm, an unfinished gold farm designed by Mr N, a good-sized castle, and that's about it. I'll put it on the list of things to do, but that list is already years long. Another reason I can't figure out how people have seed ADD or have threads like, "What should I do in MC?"
