1: find an ocean.
2: build a tower up to elevation 200.
3: build a skybase, but DO NOT put anything valuable in it.
4: dig down a mineshaft in the water using ladders.
5: put all of your chests in a secret underground base. hide it with cobble for extra protection.
6: make your /home the skybase.
The idea here is that a raider will first tower up to your skybase. when they realize there is nothing in it, they will leave. most players will not even check for your mineshaft, and it is nearly impossible to find your vault.
Have as little amount of chests as possible, because xray resource packs and mods can be used to easily locate chests and therefore your base.
Overall the xray-ers will win. So I would put as many chests down as I please on pvp servers even if i don't need them. The best thing to do is have the skybase above your claimed land, To throw them off. And then get down to level 11 asap. Find a huge lava lake and make your base inside of it. Most X-ray mods and resource packs show lava therefor it should hide your chests. And you should also surround it by obsidian just for extra measures.

Note: I did this on a modded server.
To make it seem that the skybase is an actual base put some half-broken iron armor/tools and a bunch of random blocks. This way they wont get suspicious and say maybe this is fake, they'll just think its a sucky raid.
Use furnaces to hide your most valuable items. X-ray doesn't usually look for furnaces, and most players won't bother checking there. Storage minecarts might also work for X-ray beating, though I haven't actually tried it. Also, hoppers.
As Far as I raid a base skybase usually contain rondom block and rarely got diamond items or enchanted
So They make a sky chest vault.as chest doesn't cast shadow so its hard to find but if you want to make a good faction house I could show you but alittle hard
1)Make A faction base either sky or Underground
2)Make A Sky Chest Vault Far from fac base and do /sethome vault
3)Do not just add rondom member as it may be a spy from enemy faction
4)Never tell where your base are even ally as some ally are fake and will raid you
Optional:
1)If your scared of being rob by fac member build a private house and do /sethome home
2)If you decide to stay with your fac member and scared of being rob build a private sky vault for just only you and do /sethome vault admin
3)If you wish to make a private farm incase of faction base got rob
First I claim the land. Then I build an obsidian base and cover it with lava. I put another layer of obsidian over the lava, so when people ender pearl in, the enderpearl into the lava. XD
1. Find an big lava pool on bedrock layer
2. Use only fire protection armor, so you can go there safetly
3. Dig around the bottom of the lava pool and place an water, so you can extinguish the fire
4. Place an furnace and place your valuables in the furnace
5. Care full when getting out, someone may see you from the lava pool
1. Build a small 2-height room out of some non-flammable material. Make the outside of the room sloped so it looks "natural"
2. Cover it with lava and hopefully the outside helps the lava spread in a way that makes it look natural.
3. Place a pool of water inside to douse the flames, it helps to have fire protection armor.
4. Hopefully you know which lava flow leads to your entrance, raiders will have to guess and watch out when you exit your home for anybody stalking to find the entrance.
5. Place your stuff inside, people will only see lava pools rather than whatever you are hiding inside ^___^

The one time I made a secure base, I made a really pretty artistic house. No one griefed it because they assumed a mod built it - why else wouldn't something nice looking be griefed already?
First off all, x-ray pretty much ruins any chance of you hiding your base, so don't even bother hiding it form those people. Your best option is to go so far from spawn that the x-rayers will not pass by your base. You should focus your efforts on hiding the base from the players who don't cheat.
There are ways to protect against even xrayers, though most that know how won't share that info. I have always enjoyed the redirection trick though. I've been raided multiple times, but they've never found my best stuff. Sadly, it was usually the communal vaults that got raided.
Since money is power, I generally try and liquidate as much as possible after a successful raid. They can't steal my money. the server I play on let's you buy explosives and cannon amo to use For breaking obsidian. Self repairing walls can help against these, but are very time consuming to make and take a lot of lava and water. And I still got raided because of the ended pearl glitch or the /set home glitch in the water. Not sure exactly, but nothing was broken so they had to have glitches in, unless a member betrayed me. Though I only invite players I've known for years to access the vault base.
I travel 5 kilometers from spawn, dig down to bedrock or diamond level, make a small underground base using renewable resources (Saplings, Seeds, etc.) and I mine in strip mines to get diamonds, then I surround all the rooms with a wall of obsidian. Very OP.
When building an underground base, press F3 and dig the rooms within chunk borders, leave blocks marked 0 and 15 there and dig out from 1 to 14. This keeps minecraft chunkloading from revealing the rooms. Also, it should be a little above the stripmining level, so players don't stumble across it while digging. Once on a TFC server I had an amazing mountain base that went to y227, with a hidden tree farm on top that could only be seen by staff when flying over. The server ended before anyone else found it.
Also, an enderchest is the only safe place to keep stuff.
I usually go really far out. Dig underground to bedrock. But the thing is, I dont claim my base. People who look for bases with /f map wont be able to see it, and just pass it.
The trick to sky bases is camouflage. My sky bases are made out of light blue wool to blend in to the sky and the hut is shaped like the spread of a single bucket of water on a flat surface so I can put a source block of water on the roof to perfectly cover the entire top of the hut thus making the hut invisible to minimap plugins.
