@Sheena - that's a pretty badass ravine. And with waterfalls to boot; nice! Would be really awesome to do cliff-dwelling-style houses to take advantage of the gorgeous natural terrain. At least that's how I might have done it if I'd found a ravine like that in my tunneling. Even know how I'd make the shrine. Would be extra awesome of the ravine breached the surface to let the sunlight in. I'm definitely going to have to try making something like that at some point.
Seemed like it took forever to build those last few traps...but I did spent a lot of time pissing around and beautifying the town. I uploaded more screenshots of the final traps to my photobucket but, really, at this point it's mostly more of the same - another false entrance, a couple more suffocation, a couple more snares, and a couple landmines. Only 'new' thing was a piston-powered sand trap that's really not that impressive anyway.
If anyone's interested in poking around my city and maybe playing around on my world, here's a link to download the game. I removed the features added by the mods (i.e., the armor stands and shelves) and committed suicide so it's almost like starting fresh. Pretty much all my gear and loot can be found in one place or another around the town, though. Cheers!
I'll probably start the murloc challenge sometime in the next couple days; seems pretty interesting.

@ghost: Totally nothing to do with the challenge. I *just* realized now the reason you used Shade as your religious thingie for the kobolds... ::smacks forehead::
Everything else: Have not worked on anything new. Despite all day minecrafting yesterday. None of it was challenge related. Will need to get back to those. Human challenge 1 slow grind. Human challenge 2 I think hasn't updated the server to 1.3.1. Elf challenge is Stage 2. Dwarf Challenge is Stage 2.
And have been pondering a new world with a new HC for 1.3.1... Heh. I think I like the starting point best...
@Aelis: Well, of course, it's because Shade is awesome!
I started the Murloc challenge late last night. Here's what I have so far.
I ended up deciding to take a chance and create a new world for the challenge. Seed = Murloc
Not a bad spawn place, considering.
The only passive mobs nearby, unfortunately, were sheep and the first night was like Creepergeddon thanks to the nearby desert...
Went exploring a bit and found an ocean not too far away - will come in handy when I get to Stage 3.
Nice and deep.
By the end of the fourth day I was able to construct some basic huts and get the wheat farm going. Used slabs for the walkways around and between the huts. Still need to expand the huts a bit and add all the leather items needed.
Unfortunately, the desert near the spawn goes on as far as the eye can see...and then still further. v,v Not good for a murloc has to stay near water.
After lots of exploring and sprinting to and from rivers and pods, I was finally able to locate some cows and lure them back to the town. Was a long trek, though - town is at x175, z156 and the nearest cows were clear over at x500, z72. Got a sheep and a chicken along with the cows, but the sheep will soon become a bed and the chicken was dinner. Keeping food on hand is a serious issue while I wait for the wheat to mature and I've often had to resort to eating rotten flesh and/or picking fights with skeletons just to get bonemeal.
I've got all the cobble needed to complete Stage 1, though I still need to gather a stack and a half of logs. Even so, I can already tell that I'm going to be spending a lot of time waiting for wheat to grow and calves to mature into cattle since the only other things left to complete Stage 1 are gobs and gobs of leather.
Edit: Food crisis averted! Somehow I forgot that I could freaking fish! >_< Also, logs have been gathered so now all that's left is waiting for the leather to start rolling in...

I love those stilt houses over the water. I think you gave me inspiration on how to build in swamp biomes if I ever need to.
Welp, once again I plunged and started a new Challenge. This way I have several I can rotate between when I get completely and utterly bored with one. Plus I wanted to take advantage of the new generation in 1.3.1. So without further ado, Human Challenge 3. AKA The Kingdom Challenge.
World Notes:
Seed: Lavos_Awakens
World: Large Biomes
Starting Chest: On
I call this one the Kingdom challenge as I am running things *slightly* different than the usual City Build challenge. When a deviation from the original rules comes up, I'll make a notation of it. I am using the slightly harder Human Challenge I had posted a while back as my guidelines for what is being built. Lastly, through Stage 1, I am making 'daily' updates in an 'In Character'. After Stage 1 is over, the updates will be once per session.
Day 1:
We have travelled far to escape the calamity that befell the old kingdom. It is by Ardin's mercy that we have been able to make it this far with so many. As the last scion of the old kingdom I have accepted the mantle of leadership that the survivors have given me. With supplies beginning to run low, as my first act of rulership I have declared that we would make our new kingdom here. It will be hard at first, but in time our new kingdom of Zeal shall flourish, under the divine grace of our creator.
OOC Notes:
So spawned in a pool of water. Starter chest nearby was destroyed by this fact. Starting biome was forest. A nice place to start a new kingdom. First part of the challenge will be as the normal Fantasy City Build.
Day 2:
We had spent the first day gathering building materials in order to protect us from the creatures that spawned from the great calamity. They seem to fear Ardin's Gaze and as such only come out at night. By the time the sun set, we had enough of a shelter to be safe from the nightspawn. More houses will be needed so the families are less crowded. I have given what precious little food supplies we had left to those families with children and declared that I would only eat what food the land we have arrived in provides for me. So far it has been meagre substance.
OOC Notes:
The first house ended up quite small as it was necessary to be built quickly. Still, three rooms could be made out of it once walls were set up on the interior. No interior walls were placed as of yet as the orientation of the village itself was not yet set up.
Day 3:
Gathering resources for construction of housing has been slow owing to a lack of proper tools. Had what little metal we had not been needed for our guard's arms and armor.. But no, instead we must rely upon crude wooden and stone tools for now. Still, it seems that Ardin must be pleased for he provided us with a great bounty of wild boar and I have seen some untamed cows as well. Still, we must be wary as travelling in search of more resources, I had come across a small cave in which dwelt one of the nightspawn. He shot at me with his bow, but would not cross into the light.
OOC Notes:
Very cavey underneath the town. It might be a vast complex below. Need torches first. As a note, the mention of guards and metal arms and armor is merely flavor text. There are no guards and certainly no armour.
Day 4:
Some of the farmers that arrived have become restless, feeling that there is nothing for them to do as they are neither lumberjacks nor carpenters. So I set them upon the task of preparing a farm for us. I did end up overseeing much of the work on that.
OOC Notes:
Two ponds nearby. Easy to make into farms for wheat. Which is good. I need two 4x5 farms worth.
Day 5:
With the number of families that we have, it is apparent that more farmland is needed. I spent the day working with the farmers to prepare more farmland to provide for all of our families. If this rulership job does not work out, I suppose that I could turn to farming... assuming we all survive.
OOC Notes:
Prepping two entire farms apparently does take two days. It's amazing how quickly the time flies when you are working on things.
Day 6:
Both farms are ready, though it seems we do not have enough seed to fully plant both fields. I am afraid to say, I have neither the patience nor the temperment to be a farmer. There is a deep cave on the south side of our village. With no apparent safe way to descend into it at this time, I have asked the guards to place fences around it... They have been slow to comply with my wishes.
OOC Notes: Ugh. Farm setup. Both farms are ready and have some seeds planted. I just need said seeds to grow more. And with it being an hour past the time I said I'd go to bed, this is where I call it a night. Tasks for the village: Build five more houses; gravel road between the six houses; build a watchtower on the southern end of the village; finish the wheat farms so they are both fully stocked with wheat; gather two stacks of cobble and one stack of logs. The logs will be easy as I need to clear away trees to build houses anyways. The cobble a little harder as there isn't a real safe cave to dig into.
I love those stilt houses over the water. I think you gave me inspiration on how to build in swamp biomes if I ever need to.
Right now the ones I've built are pretty much placeholders. I plan on doing an "art upgrade" when I come up with a more attractive design. I still want them to be fairly simple since they are "huts" and not houses, though. Pretty sure the walkways/stilts will stay more-or-less intact but the boxy design of the huts themselves bugs me a bit and they're currently too small to really customize inside. In fact, one has a furnace & a workbench used as walls and both have chests in the ceiling to conserve floor space.
I haven't posted an update in my challenge for a few days, mostly because I've been busy trying to complete some of the tasks! It is fun nonetheless. Congrats to Sheena and Ghost for completing their challenges!
But back to the update. The pictures are basically me completing almost every task in stage 2. I still need to build 3 more houses. Images on both imgur and in the post.
Looking good, Sir_Bacon! Really like the bridge & your unique approach to the training ground. Also, I LOVE a those beds! What texture pack is that, cuz I have half a mind to customize mine just for those sheets?
Looking good, Sir_Bacon! Really like the bridge & your unique approach to the training ground.
Why thank you! But in the imgur album I posted how I removed the armor stand mod because it lagged out my system for some reason. Dropped my framerate from ~30 with none, to ~20 with 1, and ~15 with 2. It only seemed to have made me lag whenever they were in render distance however. I'm okay with the pumpkins though, perfect for headshot training!

That was the painterly pack. If you want, I can post the password for it. Just go to http://painterlypack.net/password.php and enter the pack's password. You can either download it like that or edit it from there. But be warned, you could spend a good hour deciding what you want, there are so many options!
*P.S. Even though it was made for 1.3, you can still use it for 1.2.5*
*P.S.S. I have random mobs support checked, some of the mobs made no sense or looked weird, so I deleted them after downloading. But since this is the pack's password, you will have to either disable random mobs support or delete the ones you don't want manually like me.*
I have to say, these challenges look amazing. I've been lurking on the forum for months now, and this caught my attention and made me want to make an account. I'm going to browse and see what I want to do...I'll upload screenies
I'll be using Technic with Forestry, Laser Mod, Shelves and Armor Stands. I probably won't get to use much of the tech, but hey, it's still a cool modpack .
Edit: I've decided to roll orc. Expect screenshots within the hour.

The uploader said that Forestry is sort of a cheat, and the mining laser would be sort of cheating too. But whatever floats your boat is fine! Just try not to use those two. Timber! is more acceptable, since it reduces the grind, but not to the extent that Forestry does.
Ah, I think you skipped over a part. I probably won't use much tech at all, and definitely not too much forestry. All those machines will just be unnatural on a orc. In any sort, what is or isn't a cheat is all dependent on perspective, and as long as I feel I fulfill the concept of the race, it should be allowed, violating the rules or not. I'm in it to have fun, and I love these mods. But once again, I likely won't use a mining laser or catalyst or red matter pickaxe, because that just won't fit on a orc.
...definitely making a gnome afterwards and going to town though.
(Additionally, the Laser Mod isn't the one you are thinking of. This one allows you to reflect varying colors to achieve different effects, such as make crops grow faster or push something away...aka not something an orc would have.)
Oh, you're talking about that laser mod. I know what you're talking about. But like I said, whatever floats your boat is okay. And I agree, I don't think an orc would really know how to operate lasers.
Thanks, Sir_Bacon. I really love my texture pack, except for a couple things like the "finished" wheat is hard to tell from the rest. What'd be really neat is if I could give it a particle effect so it'd be easy to tell when it's "done." Otherwise, I'd really just be harvesting bits and pieces from other packs at most.
As for mods, I don't really like any mod that isn't almost exclusively aesthetic. I mean, I love my portal gun mod in my main game but I'd never use it for a challenge. Treecapitator and other "grind reducers" are cheating, imo, because they not only reduce the time it takes to acquire the required materials for the challenge but also make durability on tools a negligible issue. I think it's pretty cheesy to go through an entire challenge with only having to make one or two axes because a mod lets you chop down entire trees by removing a single block.
I mean, really, if you take the difficulty/grind out of resource acquisition, you may as well be playing the challenge on creative rather than survival. If that floats your boat, I'm sure we'd all love to see the beautiful screenshots but it won't mean as much as if you had to scrape together every log, torch, and sword along the way. At least not to a curmudgeon like me.
