Melons are always helpful. However, if you're on a long journey and you're out of food, try apples. Trees are basically everywhere, while animals can be hard to find. Plus, you can get wood while harvesting apples.
One possible criteria might be how automatically can you produce that food.
I can think of four possible fully automatic farms:
Melon farm: simplest.
rotten flesh farm: quite a lot possibilities.
chicken farm: quite complex, if fully automated, but there are number of instructions about it.
spider eye farm: I guess it is possible to make fully automatic witch farm, that also generates spider eyes, but... Well, this idea is probably purely academic .
So if you want food source so you can concentrate on your big build without worries about food, I would recommend to examine and calculate of melon or cooked chicken farms.
cooked steak restores the most hunger and saturation out of all the normal food, although golden apples and carrots supercharge your saturation, and are edible when you are full.

I do not care about your dragon, I will not click it, it is not real, and I hope it dies in a fire.
I reckon bread is good, because you can have really big wheat farms. Melons are good, too, but they don't restore as much hunger.
Any thing that is possible through farming is good. So, cookies, wheat and melons. Animal farms count, too, so, you could have a giant mob farm with pigs. You kill a pig, and reproduce a pig. Then cook it all!
Golden Carrots actually give the longest saturation (amount of time before hunger bar starts dropping again) even more so than steak and porkchops. They are also renewable with zombie pigmen dropping gold nuggets.
However, they are pretty much a end game item.
If you want something easy to get and auto farmable I find just farming carrots a perfect thing to do.
However, cakes are like the coolest food item ever.

For just amount of hunger, Steak, and if you're in the new snapshot, Salmon.
For more amount of actual food, bread and melons.
For easiest to get, Melons, Fish, and Bread.
Also, cookies are almost worthless in terms of hunger and saturation restored, same for melons, and bread isn't that good either (I consider it to be only an early-game food, though I take whatever I find in chests); I mainly eat baked potatoes myself, which give you about 10 times as much food from the same size farm (grow 2x faster, restore more hunger+saturation, multiple drops vs. three wheat per bread). Sure, they aren't quite as good as steak but are easier to farm and the requirement to be cooked is a non issue when compared to bread or carrots (I mine virtually infinite amounts of coal; I have a double chest of coal blocks just sitting around, never going to be used (that's over 31,000 coal, able to cook a quarter-million potatoes), and mine about 500 more coal ore every hour spent caving, netting around 1,000 coal with Fortune III and minus what I actually use).
Super rich person who automates everything: Golden Carrots
Average person with animal farms: Steak or Porkchops
Average person with crops: Pumpkin pie or baked potatoes
Poor person: Whatever you can get, probably bread
Just started this world: Animal meat
Bread.
You can sit down in a dirt field and fence it, just plant and harvest repeatedly. Minimum energy spent.
Wheat was used in the old ages, it allowed culture to flourish

If you are just starting out, I recommend using melons, If you are further into the game, I recommend pumpkin pie (sugar cane, eggs, and pumpkins all grow very fast if you have the basic farms, using a hopper farm for the chickens. If you have a big cow farm, then that is definitely the way to go.
I would prefer bread, make a 9x9 (or 18x18) farm of wheat, i know the trick...

im in 1.7.9 so dont tease me (im actually using snapshot 14w17a) ( for dayz just using a single farm of s)
Make some big mushroms, then harvest them till you get around 40. Then make 40 bowls, bring a crafting table with you but only make them when you're hungry.
Why make 40 bowls? You'll only make stews one at a time because they don't stack. Really, you only need 1 bowl.
The best food source if you want the highest food value is Steak or Porkchops come second for the highest food value. Golden Carrot comes second. Although, they are tough to make unless you have a Gold farm.
If you want the most easy to farm and easy to stack, what I'd recommend is Melons. You can make automatic Melon farms and you can craft 9 Melons to 1 Melon block. That means 9 stacks of Melons can be compressed to 1 stack of Melon blocks. Although, you need to place the blocks and break them. Also, they only drop 3-7 Melons. If you break all 64 Melon blocks, you can get 192-448 (you get more if you use a Fortune tool) pieces of Melons which equivalents to 614-1433.6 food value. A full stack of Steaks or Porkchops will equivalent to 1331.2 food value. A full stack of Golden Carrots would equivalent to 1305.6 food value. The food value of Melons can get even higher than Porkchops/Steak and Golden Carrots but that's only if you get 7 Melons every time you break the Melon blocks.
Melons aren't really good food source. The only reason I only included it is because it's very easy to farm. Bottom line is Steak/Porkchops is the best food.
Oh I've just found out this thread is two years old. Such a long post for a necroed (?) topic.

Any other idea of fully automated farms anyone?
Breed cow/pig, kill, get food, wait for babies to grow up, breed...repeat
Or, you can make an automated farm, but that's beyond my redstone skills

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
