I need some inspiration for a cool base in survival mode. Something different. Castles are over done, tree houses are too much trouble to attempt. I'v done the mountain base thing about 20 times over. I want something different, throw some ideas around for me.

"Every time a bat gets killed, a miner falls in a pit of lava while carrying half a stack of diamonds."
Depends on if you're looking for a whole new foundation or just other building ideas.
If you're looking for a whole new idea, try building something out in the middle of the ocean. Either above or under the water. Underwater bases can present a fun challenge in survival.
Or you could try building something on a floating island in the sky. This can also be a fun challenge, although this might be difficult to reach quickly.
I do like your floating island idea. I was considering an underwater build. Just thought it might be a little tricky without potions on a new map. I might give floating islands a try.

I've made many cool bases, but I think the coolest one I've made is the underground base. You can make it enormous and you can have minecarts to deliver recources. I just used tnt to blow my cavern.
I prefer towers myself, build a tower, then build a small wall to keep mobs out, place a pit with trap doors in front of the entrance to trap zombies that come knocking on your door.

May i offer, if you do persue the idea of doing a chain of sky islands, may i referance either the Floating island from Final Fantasy 12, or the Floating islands from Avatar, both are great, may take time to get the looks but a good idea, i prefer the Final Fantasy 12 floating islands more though c: if only you had the advantage of what was in the game where touching certain vines/rocks made them float and fill in the path ways.
why not a mid evil village with a volcano next to it and make a grave yard with a system of dimly lit catacombs under it.
Kakariko village anyone? Death Mountain? Royal tomb?
OT: How about a settlement in the middle of the ocean like Kamino in star wars; have it be made of grey material (iron, if you ever get enough) and make it self sufficient. Extra points for a clone factory and boba fett's spaceship! goodluck!
Live in a zoo.
You're tasked with making authentic-looking habitats for each mob in the game, getting a couple of them in the place with nametags on them so they don't despawn, and setting up a modest home for yourself as the zookeeper's quarters. You should use the exhibits for non-hostile mobs as your farming-areas, and not set up separate farms..

Baseball, then Minecraft.
Eh. If I do anything that floats. It will most slikely be a floating chain of islands.

The village with a volcano next to it with a grave yard sounds like pompeii
