I actually started learning about Minecraft before I even knew about the game. I watched a lot of videos like SeaNanners and stuff like that. So I basically knew everything before I even made my first move on the game.
When I first started, I found out about cacti relatively late. I decided that my mid-mountain fort needed protection from any enemies "that can fly" and placed it on my fort's roof. I didn't know there were no flying enemies on the overworld, and only managed to poke myself more times than I can count with my entire roof lined with cacti. (Y U NO USE FENCES?!)

Are youbored of minecraft? It's not the new features. I'll give you a hint:It's the terrain generation. Go play a map generated in 1.7.3 or earlier, then tell me you don't agree.
I swore that I would not look at an FAQ or guide when I started playing minecraft so, I logged on and I ran around punching things until it became dark. Then things started punching me instead. After four or five deaths I buried my character in the ground and left him there while I looked up what I had to do to survive.
well, I got minecraft mid - late alpha stage. When I first played it I got half a cave made then chased by a single spider into a desert like area where I buried myself 5 blocks undergroun for the night. The following day I got killed by that vary same spider.enti I quit the world and created a new one. Played that one allot. Eventualy I relized that iron was actually what I was throwing out and that you have to smelt it. After those two things I basically got waaaaaaaayyyyyyy smarter. (Ps if there are any problemss withthis post like spelling it is cuz I'm using my phone which is being rly problomatic)
I've actually hugged a creeper and we both lived- for a minute or so. But the creeper was pissed at this skeleton. Long story, pretty sure it's in my description.
My noob story? The first time I played minecraft, around 1.2ish (BETA!), I failed so badly I managed to get sticks and a crafting table by nightfall. Then I couldn't tell the difference between creepers and zombies, and just assumed all zombies blew up if you punched them a few times.
More recently, a group of endermen tore a few blocks out of my wall of my fortress, in a place I didn't venture often, and so when I traveled through the corridor I was ambushed by creepers. Long story short, lost a bunch of diamonds and most of the West wall of my fortress.
I started playing in a hotel room on my BF's account while he was sick. I decided to build a big sign made out of glass and lava where the SMP spawn point was (this is in beta)so whenever someone died they would see my name letting them know where they were! I did not know about the shift button so I died a lot from falling into lava. Many buckets perished. The sign did get done. It was fantastic. I bought an account within a week of me playing.
I was lucky that I had a couple people show me the ropes. My BF was very patient with my bagillion questions.
First time I played the game was when my brothers friend showed it to him, and when we were trying to play we kept clicking the mouse button instead of holding it down. We were about to quit until we found out we were supposed to hold it down.
This happening to me too. Kept punching trees for ages and was like WTF WHY WON'T THEY BREAK LIKE I SAW ON U-TOOBZ?!?! Then a had a sort of epiphany and tried holding down the button. Then I realised how obvious it was and how stupid I was for not getting it sooner. And that pretty much set the tone for the rest of my minecraft experience. :biggrin.gif:
I watched a lot of videos before i bought the game, so I knew the basics but still made a couple of noob mistakes.
I started playing early alpha, so things have changed a lot since
1. didn't realise that animals only spawned in lit grassy areas and wondered how the hell animals got in my house when all the doors were closed. 2. pressed q by mistake while stood next to a lava pit holding a diamond pickaxe (I can't be the only one!)
3. got lost a lot and took days to find my house again.
4. opened a chest with a bucket of lava in my hands and burned down my entire house. It was an old bug which used to open the chest and pour lava as well. I still no longer open chests with a bucket in my hand.
5. I thought if I dug a moat outside my door and filled it with water monsters would drown in it. I went outside in the morning and realised monsters could swim and they were all having a party in the moat.
I wish I hadn't researched Minecraft as much before I bought it, it would have been better at the beginning.
Classic. Don't worry, I've done that too, and embarassingly, more than once! It's gotten to the point where Q is a bit like the proverbial "big red button".
Number 3 used to happen constantly to me too before there were beds. Now I spend days looking for my death chest and never finding it. :sad.gif:
I built my large doghouse RIGHT next to my house. Not only were there dogs barking constantly, but I couldn't attack anything near my house because as soon as I did my 15+ dogs would all teleport to me and I'd have to spend 10 minutes on peaceful trying to put them all back. Actually, a better noob story would be that I actually thought dogs would be useful...
I started playing in beta 1.3 and I was immedietly obsessed with collecting all the mineral types. I could never find coal, which i was told was used to make torches and I also didn't know that you could make charcoal. So for the first MONTH of playing Minecraft, I lived in total darkness and had to constantly fight off monsters spawning in my house. Also, I wondered what to make my house out of and since i didn't know how to make a pickaxe for the first couple of days, all my structures were made of dirt. I finally figured out the basic recipes from the wiki and started a mining tunnel at bedrock level. I slowly found each of the minerals: black stuff? "The fabled coal is now mine! Hahaha!" gold stuff? "Obviously this is gold... but it's gonna be **** because it's a soft metal huh? Yep." red stuff? "Rubies! **** yessss! ...Oh wait, its red-stone. What a stupid name." blue stuff? "Diamonds amazing... I am a god now!" Finally, days later I found pink stuff. "Whats this weird freaking pink stuff?? Oh... its iron? Thats stupid." *looks on google and realizes that iron ore actually looks like that* So yeah, I've actually spared you 90% of the noob-ness I experienced.
Well I made a world and I had watched my brother play for awhile so i knew the basics like creepers and such. I made a small dirt house and dug out a basement. Spiders spawned in the basement and I freaked out wondering how they got in there. So I closed off all of the walls and I had no torches yet so I just made chimneys to let in moonlight. Spiders still spawned so I closed off the area and never went back in. Then after a week of playing I found Invedit and Tnt'd the whole world after making an awesome fort and lava volcanoe that i could walk inside from a ocean floor entrance made of glass. But I did have alot of minetracks and such and some cool underground stuff. I made bases all over the world incase I got lost. I had a pretty good noob beginning I raged alot because of caves and stuff but it was fun and the experience got me hooked on the game like crack.
I bought a loooong time ago, and when I played my mistake was, I didn't make a roof for my foxhole, and I got blown up. Also, I didn't get enough wood.
I somehow didn't noticed the "Press E to open inventory", spent an entire minecraft day doing random stuff, then i looked in the acheivments. So ok, then i spent another day trying to figure out how to make a crafting table, then another one finding out how to make stuff in the crafting table.

This isn't a signature asking for reputation, neither asking for clicks in eggs or giant spoilerceptions. Problem, spammers?
I've burnt down so many houses and forests, died from stupid creepers so many times (still the only mob to trouble me) and drown. Although im sure many have done this my very first expirience was clicking really fast trying to break things, ended up looking it up after trying and exploring for hours, imagine my dissapointment. I quit for a couple days after i figured it out, I was ticked. I started playing in the late stages of alpha after I heard about it on G4.
I build a raggedy shelter (in a little valley); later built a "mob moat" that was just a ditch, but it did its job. Needing more wood for the tower of a building, I went to the across-mountain forest. Cut a few trees. Tried to get back home, but I had gotten lost. I wandered so far that I found a lava lake on the surface (nearest one to my house was far away...) and suicided in it. Luckily my house is near spawn.
It rained once. It was taking so long to stop raining, and for SOME ODD REASON I feared it would raise the sea level, near which was my house (though nature formed hills around it, ah 1.5 generators...), and thus flood my house.
I converted a little barely-offshore (1 block, diagonally) island into a "beach house". Of dirt with no glass. Looked sad...
Due to being lost, I'd always carry a material I could make a pillar out of, like Cobble or Dirt. Although it proved useful, my house was right next to a desert AND a beach (separated by another biome), which I could've used sand from, like I did when making my house.
Throughout all this, I never dared set foot on a cross-"ocean" (what was an ocean, though only 10-20 blocks across) area, with a gravel beach then a lush forest.
Also, I was and still am terrified of squid, at times; in deep water they can appear not there, and then BOOM you run into one...
Other than that, I played on Peaceful. I had no trouble on "Hostile" mode (Easy or up) because I had the more-efficient-than-now leather armor, and build 3-block-high pillars against Creepers.
I haven't really moved onto Iron tools as a "norm" yet, though. Stone is just too common, though I use Iron pickaxes for what I should.
If I try to fail and I succeed, what did I really do?

I didn't understand redstone whatsoever at the time and I wired my tnt cannon all weird, causing it to destroy itself, half of my entire fort, and spilling water from my prototypes everywhere. It took me a while to clean up, but I learned my lesson.
