I'll probably be hosting a server for challenges like this in a few weeks. I would like to see people playing different challenges on the same map, could be fun.
Would it be allowed to make little mini-trees and connect them to your mother tree? They could be used as storage trees and such.
Go for it. The challenge is really what you make of it. But to fit in character, there are a number of trees that grow multiple trunks or even clone themselves.
I just want to invite anyone who is interested to a Challenge specific forum I have created, so everyone who enjoys playing different styles can get together, browse other styles easily, and not have to bother with threads being buried. This is the first challenge I am officially sponsoring, and I have spoken to Lilariel about doing this.
I am also offering blog service that goes hand-in-hand with the forums. So you could create your own Tree Spirit blog, it will be linked to the main thread, and everyone will easily be able to browse each other's work.
The Challenge Thread(I call it a gameplay style rather than challenge, as there is no end-goal/competition) is posted here:
Let me know if you have any questions. I know the community looks bare right now, but I just got things up and running. The forum has a lot of interesting features that are socially-oriented, so I hope to see many of you there!
I plan to have a dozen different gameplay styles hosted there by the end of July.
Instead of doing this solely on SSP I decided to restart the "Yigg" project on the server I've been playing on, adding these limitations to its restructuring the results so far are as you see here:
It looks small now but that's because the tree has only just received its Tree Spirit. For realism the tree will expand and grow taller/wider as it becomes larger and more intricate.
Obsidian Empire is the place to apply if you wish to help with this world-tree project. Come join us today! :smile.gif:
no this isn't supposed to be a recruiting message >_<
I saw this challenge, started today and I thought immediately about making a deku tree. Here is my current tree:
Just have to add leaves, which is going to be hard. I like birch even though it is not standard for what I am making. And I've never had a shortage of saplings with these trees.
I have some questions about the placement of blocks and where it is safe i can walk next to it. I have many differtent scenarios and can you please make a list of which ones are acceptable and which ones arent.
1. Standing Diagnol
2. Standing Under
3. Standing on dirt block that is above woodblock
From what i can understand you have to be in the vacinity of the block like a 3 by 3 by 3 cube with the log in the center right?
Sulphur= air

First one is good, second one is good, third one is not good. It's easier to imagine I think, by imagining that you need to be able to reach out a hand, and physically touch the tree. You can do that when you're both under and diagonally next to a log, but if the log is covered by something, you can't touch it. And assuming the last picture is a birds-eye view, then yeah. All the sulfur spots are good spots. :smile.gif:
i was wondering, i'm building a gaint tree too (not according to this challenge just for fun and i have other building projects) but i just noted how one of the branches is quite close to my mountaintop castle/fortress. i believe i've seen a design or picture of a (wooden) bridge that curved to the earth, a bit like a rope bridge. does any of the tree builders have an idea of how to build such a bridge?
I'd imagine the best way to build something like this would be through heavy use of wooden half-blocks and fences, perhaps. I haven't tried myself, so can't really help much more than with ideas, I guess. Try experimenting a bit?

Well, ****. I just built the floor for my new tree. didnt build walls or a roof, just the floor. now its covered in snow and it wont stop snowing. Darnit!!!!!!
So, a screeny of a tree I started yesterday on a server.
I'm going to make it really tall, and then add a crown of leaves. There are some roots on the other side of the tree, and some going down into a mine. And I didn't have any problems at all with sapling drops.
Challenge accepted. I'm going to find a map where I'm in or near a non-winter forest, and then edit in one pine sapling and one bone. That way I can tell which wood is from other trees, and convert or destroy it.
Bonus challenges:
* I intend to build a fireplace.
* There must be leaves. As soon as I have two iron, I'm making shears. If at any time my tree is entirely without leaves once I have placed my first leaf block, it has died and I lose.

"I dunno, ZK, that sounds pretty awesome..." "Well then, let's get awesome!"
Shears are AWESOME for this indeed btw, I had more or less given up on trying to fix my canopy properly, growing trees to get leaves where I wanted them has been an incredibly patience-testing endavour. xD
Finally being able to manually place the leaves makes it a LOT more convenient!

its great to see people still into this. I have added a rule for myself- since my jackolantern heart is not flammable, if any of the wood around it burns away, my tree is dead.
btw, its still snowing here. need to make a roof...
You can hardly see anything because of the trees, but there is an unlit nether portal in there. I also have a whet farm on the third floor inside my tree.

Restarted and am now trying it with the outlined details here. Decided to replace my core with the workbench.

It's a kind of challenge that will never really die, I think. Your idea was magnificent. :wink.gif:

Yeah, the screenie was a little late. :tongue.gif: It wasn't even of the same tree I was talking about, either.
