That's how I'm handling the "ascetic" parts of my tree, as I get to them. Course it only really works because I'm working in oak, and oak can grow through oak.
When I'm ready for a section to start looking pretty and "treelike" I'm planning on wrapping the entire section with oak saplings and bonemealing until they grow, then removing the dirt and placing logs to connect it down to the previous section. A bit of shaping, cleaning out the inside a little, and some shearing and pruning and the natural randomness in the oak growth will convert it from a solid block of wood on top of a solid block of wood, into something a little more random.
That mod was made for a request I posted. Apparently it's an alpha still and some stuff is missing, but it's still cool that someone came through and put in the time to make this mod. And the link works fine for me, must've been a short term issue.

I hope someday there's more magic in Minecraft, though I know it's not likely to happen. In the meantime, I play modded a lot. I enjoy a lot of other games too, so don't expect me to be on the forums all the time.
I found out about this challenge today, as well as a map that is completely unrelated but would be fun to play with this... the City of Newisle. a massive modern city that could be taken over by the tree. There is a town called 'Grand Tree' that is mostly made of wood, but I wouldn't suggest starting there unless you wanted a really easy start. The only thing is I would add a rule about not being able to collect some of the resource blocks used as decoration, as diamond, gold, and iron blocks are used in certain parts. Or you could use them as an incentive to take over the city for resources.
It's nice to see that someone else has taken up the mantle that I put down a year ago. Good luck to you! May your roots grow deep and your branches tickle the skies.
Edit: Just realized I put this in the wrong place, and somehow I don't know how to delete it
Concerning your edit, only mods can delete posts on this forum. Simply report your own post with the reason being "delete my post" and the staff will review it and seeing as you have two posts of the same nature here I'm guessing they'll delete at least one of them. (Don't report both posts, that would only create confusion)

I am one of the original Tree Spirit Challenge server owners listed in the OP. Unfortunately, that old server is no longer active, but after a few years of hiatus wrangling life together, I am back in the MC community and have already been working to restart the TreeCrafters server with new life and ideas! I already have a custom plugin in development (with a beta starting new week), a whitelisted server running (IP hidden until everything's ready, but already accepting private messages from people who'd like to join as we roll out beta access), and a hub world in the works.
I am very excited to get this running again and I hope to eventually see all of your creations!
It might be helpful if I create a new thread instead of replying to comments in this one, since I can't update the OP with new information relating to how the challenge has evolved as MC has been updated in the last several years. Will probably wait until I'm ready to announce the server with an official thread, but we shall see.
Heya folks! I just made a video teaching how to play the Tree Spirit Challenge. If you have friends that you'd like to play the Tree Spirit Challenge with, this might be a good video to share so they can understand how it works.
At the end I show off some builds from other players who are doing the Tree Spirit Challenge. Enjoy!
I've started a loose/forgiving run of this challenge, as I hadn't really played Minecraft in a couple years before rediscovering this thread and deciding to make a video series of it. Started in an archipelago of sorts, so it should be interesting!
I love the idea of this challenge ! I started myself a new serie on my channel. It's in French, sorry but I wanted the creator of this challenge to know that it inspired another player.

That link doesn't load a valid page.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
curseforge is having issues, just wait until they fix it

I've found a challenging seed for this challenge! The seed is Tree Spirit, im not spoiling what caused me to share it, but its pretty challenging!
I like your kitten's maille.
I found a tree spirit mod that's updated all the way to 1.12! Here's a link: https://minecraft.curseforge.com/projects/tree-spirit

Started this challenge today. Currently waiting out my first night in the Roofed Forest. 21 logs and 5 saplings to start with. Not bad in my opinion.

If I ever get my modded version up and running, maybe you'd like to try an instance of that for a while? May I keep in touch?

And now, one month later, I'm excited to start my Let's Play series using this challenge.
