Curse you OrigamiMan! I've been wanting to start this every since Lilariel started this thread but just never got around to it. Now after viewing your progress I'm feeling the urge again and it's killing me because I'm already in the middle of a large project. Perhaps another side project won't completely derail me... *sob*
Basically any wood adjoining an air block that is within two blocks horizontally and up to five blocks above the fire block is a potential fire hazard. This fire spread happens even through the solid blocks surrounding your fire.

Hey there! My friend Roogisan and I have been loving this challenge! We loved so much in fact that we've decided to do a short series of it on our YouTube channels We have 9 episodes slated from now until the 1st of March, the first 8 will come out on Wednesday each week and the last will be on a Tuesday. The first video is already up and I'd loved to know what you all think of it!
Ps. We have taken a few creative liberties aka cheated a bit, to make things more enjoyable to watch, nothing crazy just a tag-team type rule.
Going to be attempting this soon, with a slight change: instead of normal logs, I'll be using the posts from Garden Stuff. Attached relevant image.
They are slightly smaller than full blocks, but they look better for root-type systems and branches. Also, 4 from 1 log and a point of durability from a vanilla axe.

Fall into the hands of sorrow
Drawn by the darkest bay
Walk into the pit of silence
I am the one calling your name

I decided I wanted to give this a try, so I made up a new world. Lots of spruce trees. Couldn't find the "perfect" tree, so I wandered around a bit. Then, suddenly, there it was. And I said,
"That one. That's my tree."
(I cheated a bit to get up there... Updates to come.)

Although ICountFrom0's post seems to have revived an old thread and I typically wouldn't approve of necromancy, I've actually been wanting to post here for a few days now and was mourning how old the thread had gotten. I really wish this challenge were more popular, it seems every bit as cool as skyblock to me. There was once a mod that enforced the rules of this challenge, but it's abandoned on like 1.2.5... I want a mod to do something like that again, but maybe with some tweaks to allow expansion into other dimensions. Command blocks are limited after all, as there really is no way for them to check if the logs you place are descended from your tree and/or connected to the heart log. Also, please, if a mod sees this, don't lock the thread... I'm still interested in this challenge, and I'm hoping others will be too now that the thread has been revived.
EDIT: Check this thread for how I think the new mod should work, if someone made this I would be thrilled.
I hope someday there's more magic in Minecraft, though I know it's not likely to happen. In the meantime, I play modded a lot. I enjoy a lot of other games too, so don't expect me to be on the forums all the time.
There was a brief resurgence of the mod enforcing it in 1.6.4 I think, (as I'd just re-read the entire topic for inspiration) but I am not sure if that got completed.
It looks like the command block version should still work without any changes even if it is "oak only" for the sake of enforcement.
If only it was possible to take command blocks, drop them through an interpreter, get a script file, and have a mod enforce those additional rules.
Though, on the other hand, it IS possible to cause a building to be built in the spawn chunks, loaded by those chunks, containing a bedrock and barrier block with the command blocks inside of it. ... but I'd need a modified version of the existing command blocks anyway... one that enforced based on the ore dictionary "log", and by preference it would force you into spectator mode until you returned to your spawn. With another set that let you set your spawn without the bed. I'd have to trust people to not set spawn away from the heart of the tree, and not to abuse spectator mode TOO badly... but still.
As for actual progress?
I've got the mods selected. I've got permissions worked out for them. I've made the essential changes to force compatibility. I'm resisting temptation to add progression tweaks that would make you use the mods in order and opting for a more open play style. I'm trying to balance it so that it's still hard if you don't use the tree spirit, but not impossible if you DO live and die by the tree.
As for necromancy *gestures at avatar*
While I may be a zombie, I tend to be against it myself. This though was for good purpose. You won't catch me in a dead thread to no good ends. Nay, I only make zombies where there is a reason for them.

Don't know if you saw my edit before you posted this, but I wanted a new mod for it so I posted in the mod requests section and made a link to there from here. Hopefully someone wants this who can code and has time... And as for the necromancy, haha I get it.

Challenge alternatives (might need work) start in the nether, mushroom spirit challenge, and grow not just a tree, but a tree city to house tree spirits of all shapes, sizes, barks, creeds, and wood of life (pun(thing)s intended. Also, skyblock tree spirit (as if neither had a slow star in the first place).
Today turns out to be a good day for me. I've now got a pack code I can give to those few insane tree spirits that want to try a modded pack. That's not the only way I have to hook up testers with it, but I'm not *yet* making it public, so that would be a PM please.
I honestly think the time when a mod could have simply done the spirit might be done. How would we code for "inside a room made of wood" anyway? How can it tell the wood is there, if we've cladded the outside in obsidian to protect it, and given the inside a nice paneling of pine planks to make it homey?

Something like what space mods do, except only the wood and leaves are sealable and add a door made from living Spirit Wood that is also sealable. Then, put a block somewhere in the room to act as the "oxygenator" and voila!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Ive been working on my tree everyday. Im really committed to this challenge.
Boo Ya I got the Fireplace!!! Its been burning for an hour now. no fire anywhere else.
Just a word of warning, I'm not so sure it's safe from what I can see in that picture. Please refer to this picture on the wiki for the fire zone around each block of fire:

Are there any tree spirit servers so you can do this with other people?

This challenge seems quite nice, I think I'll give it a go.
Though, I'm curious, if I find myself unfortunately separated from my tree, what happens?
Also, is it possible to just touch the corner of your tree?

Hey everyone, I also decided to give this challenge a go, looks really awesome. Ill post pictures later of my tree when I get farther along.

For those still interested in this challenge, I updated DragonMasterX's command block system for 1.10.Just oak logs. Here is a link to his page so he gets credit. My post with the file is #8. http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/redstone-discussion-and/redstone-creations/2465170-tree-spirit-challenge-mechanics

I've put together a mod pack to be on theme with the challenge.
Once it's ready I'll be posting again about it.
I rather like the concept of the command blocks involved in that version.
Good luck with that. Decent modpacks take an enormous amount of work to get everything integrated and working properly.
