No, I don't believe there are any servers that currently run this challenge in vanilla minecraft. As far as I know the only one still running this challenge is FTB based.
Thats a shame. Im currently doing the challenge on my tiny pathetic hamachi server with a couple of my best friends. Its a lot of fun to play with multiple people, but I dont want to deal with heavy mods while I play.
Wow. Been a long time since I've looked at this thread. Looks like you've become something of a trusted Elder Spirit for all these wild sprites, Blazin. That's nice of you.
It's good to see that there is still some interest in the challenge even if they're not coming to our server. Have fun, everyone! This challenge has kept me interested and occupied for nearly 4 years. And the people attracted to it generally seem to be a wholesome sort. You couldn't have adopted a better Elder.
Could you use pistons to move your heart block to a new location
That is a pretty tough question to answer. Some people would say that you absolutely could not as it removes the stationary part of the challenge. It honestly depends on how you want to play the game. If you think being able to move your heart log will make it more enjoyable for you then feel free. In my opinion, if you were going to do that you would have to make absolutely sure that your heart log was constantly connected to the rest of your tree at all times.
Honestly though, if I don't like where my heart log initially was and want to build my main tree in a different place I just kinda leave it alone, build a small miniature tree to surround it, and then move along to where my main tree will be. My thought process with this is that in a forest there will be groups of trees that look the same (all the same leaf colors in the fall) and grow in similar shapes. This is because these groups of trees are actually the same tree that has reproduced asexually (either by sprouting, suckering, or layering). Examples of layering and suckering shown below.
I would also say that it would be fine to move the heart log. I've done it myself. Usually not very far, but enough to overcome some inconveniences. Your tree can shape the world around it -- why not itself, too? Parts of real trees shift as they grow, as well, so it's not all that unrealistic.
One rule I've added for myself that kind of goes between playing with die and respawn and hardcore is making myself earn multiple lives. Every time I die, I have to sacrifice a stack of saplings from MY tree. They either have to be tossed or set aside for fuel and can never be planted. If I don't have a stack when I die, then it's game over.
I wonder if anyone's tried this with Greatwoods (Thaumcraft) or Redwoods (Natura) yet? Redwoods might be a bit too big but Greatwoods, I feel, would work nicely.

These are my changes to the rules:
1. When i spawn,i get 2 stacks of bonemeal.
2.My spawn is set on top of the tree heart, and if i walk off the tree,i do /kill
3.After using up all the bonemeal i spawned in, i can make a 5x5 area of leaves suraunded by logs and a furnace in the middle. After this, i can collect 5 logs every time i smelt an item(since that's how trees grow) and expand my tree.
4.I can convert logs into hunger bars and vise-versa.
If i make up new rules, and i will, i'll change this post and add more

I find it more effective to build with leaves on the surface, and underground i use logs, since they are stronger and harder to destroy by lava/mobs

After getting a bit bored i went to LAN and turned cheats on on my survival world, just to fly around and try to find a desert, one of the few biomes I have not encountered yet in my world. At around -1826, -2941 I found myself gazing upon a little island with 2 Birch trees and Huge dark oak trees, in the middle of a big lake branching off in all directions right in the middle of a roofed forest (Large Biomes). As I was beggining to get bored with my base I took note of the coordinates just in case I wanted to start a second base. Then yesterday I was browsing the forum and found this awesome challenge and instantly decided to start off in that island. So I opened my world, tp to the island and began to work. I immediately died, after pausing the game for a while not realizing LAN was still open (LOL). Ok. Second try. To my amazement this island was the perfect spot for this challenge. Being the middle of a lake was good for scurity reasons. I chose one of the Birch trees as my Spirit Tree, Birch being my favorite tree in MC. I started creating my tree and spread its begining roots so as to reach the oak trees to chop them down so I could have a 360 view of the lake to be on the lookout of incoming swimming mobs. Then I chose a spot to begin rooting underground and form a cave to get coal and iron as reaching diamond levels would take a lot of time. To my surprise as soon as I began digging I found coal beneath the first layer of dirt, and picking this coal next to it was an iron vein to boot. Perfect start, got a few torches to lightup the island and some iron from which I made a bucket and saved the rest. After a while working above on the tree I went back into the cave to go deeper in search for more coal and about just immediately after I broke the blocks that were behind the first coal vein, BAM! I found myself on a ledge near the roof of a giant Ravine. it was completely dark, I made a hole on the roof and waited till morning for the sunlight to show how deep it was. I am currently expanding my roots down the walls of the ravine, I hope it isn't long before I can find some diamonds for an enchanting table.
This will be an epic challenge, just as I was getting bored of MC. Nice!
Edit: The first week or two is rough. I am used to playing on hard mode, I had to go on medium because of hunger, its been about a week and I have not eaten anything, surviving on half a heart. Wheat is growing so soon the fear of dying to something really stupid will go away.
Edit: Personal rules.
- No diagonal connections, all parts of the tree MUST be touching each other.
- Minimum terraforming, I want my roots to adapt to the terrain, not the terrain to my roots. If there is a hill on the way I will go through it, around it or over it, the hill must remain.
- If there is a lake or river the roots will reach the bottom and then go back up on the other side. If the path is too long and I would drown before reaching the other end then I cannot cross through that lake or river.
-minimum retracing, if I place a log it stays there forever. I allow myself to break and reset some just to change the log orientation. This gives randomness to the root system and forces me to think twice about how to make new paths.
I'm glad you're having fun with the challenge. A tip for food is that wheat doesn't have to be grown on hydrated farmland. If you just till whatever dirt is handy and immediately plant your seeds, the land will stay farmland and the seeds will grow (a bit more slowly than they would on hydrated soil). If there are chickens around, they make for an easily renewable food source, too. Just trap one on top of a hopper to collect the eggs while you're doing other stuff. As you walk by, pick up the eggs and hatch them on top of the hopper, too, to increase your egg production speed. It doesn't take long to get a pretty good egg supply going, and then you can hatch the eggs for chickens to eat.
I usually do allow diagonal connections for myself, but only on new growth and only edge diagonals -- no point diagonals. Once a root starts getting older or is frequently used, I'll fill in the diagonals so the logs are all touching face to face.
You might try fully enclosed roots for going underwater. You can remove the water from the hollow interior as you go. If you're playing modded, then multipart covers make really cool hollow roots. With those you can walk inside a 1x2 hollow log made of covers. No need to empty out the interior with these, either, as even a thin cover takes up the whole blockspace, preventing water from coming in.
