Are logs diagonally next to each other considered as connected?
I'm playing this challenge for few days now and sometimes I make my roots diagonally for better look.
I made a texture pack to use, but all i did was change the glowstone texture to a log texture. I out that in place of my heart log (yes, i know i destroyed the heart log, but it was to make it glow, dont get mad.) It's pretty awesome. I plan on making my tree have a large, hollow trunk with multiple rooms, one being the heart room.

I try to avoid doing it myself, but this is again a bit of a game mechanic limitation. There's only four directions in Minecraft, so to speak. :tongue.gif: A tree would have absolutely no problems growing in all angles both horizontally and vertically, but it's impossible to do so in the game due to how the blocks work and everything. We just gotta settle for the next best thing!
But if I were to decide a "yay or nay" I'd say yay, but in moderation. If it looks better, go for it. :wink.gif: I only build diagonally whenever I'm moving vertically.

No harm in that! The heartlog is symbolic after all. As long as you can protect it from the elements! :wink.gif:
As far as I'm aware, there's no multiplayer server only used for this at the moment. The only one posted for it earlier was taken off again after everything was burned by griefers. Most of the ones who play on SMP servers do so on private ones I think, while most play it on single-player servers.
Well I personally play on peaceful too, so I agree. I cannot see how anyone can survive the first night if they remain standing on a log, even with a taller tree its still impossible to make yourself creeper-proof. I may turn them back on once I am established, Im not sure yet.
Surviving the first nights is most definitely possible. If all three doing the challenge on my SMP server can, then so can everyone else. :wink.gif: A very minimalistic solution for surviving a night, is a hole in the ground with a plug on top!
I'm taking a bit of a break from the tree-challenge for now, as we have a lot of nether-railways to make from place to place elsewhere on the server, and quite a number of elevators to replace. I'll see if I can get some situational pics of each tree up later. :smile.gif:

The most wonderful thing about science is that it doesn't ask for your faith, it asks for your eyes. The universe doesn't care about what you believe.
This is how I do randomly wandering roots, it should work for birch or pine, but standard oak doesn't work as easily*. This method really helps you feel like you are "growing" a root system, and avoids the problem I had the first time with a surface terraformed with logs or log patterns.
This shows two blocks of root going up from a top down perspective. I plant a torch at the end of the root, and 3 saplings on the other side of the root as the picture shows. Eventually one of them grows.
When I revisit, it looks like it does in the second picture, with a full grown tree above the disconnected log. I pick up the ungrown saplings, and torch, and place a log block where the torch was. I leave the bottom log, to incorporate it into my root system, and chop down the rest of the tree. Now we are back to square one, the end of a root.
I like to follow the random direction it chooses and place my torch in line with that direction, then arrange the saplings around it, the middle one in line, and one on each side. This makes roots that randomly wander over the landscape.
Random isn't always good, this shows a root that tries to circle around on itself. This is an example of this method delivering a result I am not happy with. Another example is if you wanted your root to go mostly in one direction, but wanted to incorporate some randomness. By altering the sapling and/or torch placement, can bias or limit its possibilities without just placing roots arbitrarily where you want them to go.
I tried out doing it like this, but felt it made turns too densely and quickly. Your milage may vary, but I found extending the root in 1 block the direction it chose made it look better.
*For Pine and Birch, when one tree grows it excludes the rest of the saplings. With birch I have seen 2 grow when one is short and the other is tall and they are 2 apart, I figure thats a good place to fork out into 2 roots. With oak, the other trees arent excluded, just limited to using the 10% (33% rain forest) big tree growth algorithm. If there isn't a solid trunk shortly above it, the oak sapling will eventually grow. If you check frequently this method can still work with oak, but if the saplings are given excessive time, you may find all have grown.
Glad that this is still going so well =D It's fun to look at all the different creations people have made.
I had some issues trying to get into the new forums :/ But now it's fixed, yay.
Good to have you back! :biggrin.gif: Your challenge has grown into a really popular one, you definitely deserve every ounce of credit for it. :wink.gif:
I'm not sure if spawn-rules have changed in 1.6, but I assume they haven't;
Both hostile and friendly mobs can NOT spawn in a 24 block circular sphere around you, so depending on the size of your tree, and assuming you're standing inside it, you might never see mobs in or near it.
You just need to either try to lure them to you by going outside and waiting for something to come near you for hostile mobs, and just hoping something runs by close enough for friendly ones.
Alternatively, you can build a network of roots that crisscrosses in various directions so you can move about on a larger area to reach them. :wink.gif:

It'd be awesome if more people could post pictures of their trees, I need more pictures to look at to decide how my tree should be! :wink.gif:
And they all look brilliant..so come on, post some pics! :smile.gif:

Edit.
It had one, but it got griefed. :sad.gif:
Ouch. How did the server turn out, and how'd it get griefed? I'm curious what this would be like with tons of trees popping up around each other!
There's a link to the save with it on a few pages back I believe!
There weren't a lot of people on it, and it never really had the chance to really take off, as everything was torched into ashes already after one or two days, and the host didn't want to see it happen again as it was on a private server. So it went back to being white-listed, which is perfectly sensible, I would almost certainly have done the same.
The minority ruining for the majority, as usual. :dry.gif:
If someone with hosting capabilities has the desire and resources to host a server for the challenge, I would be more than happy to link it in the main post! The interest for it is still pretty great, and fire has been significantly nerfed, so it can at least only be griefed as much as any other server, instead of being completely annihilated.

Welcome back!
Terrific challenge idea, as you can see it's quite popular. Thanks!

Generally no, part of the challenge is starting and surviving with absolutely nothing, until you get the resources from the mother tree. :smile.gif:
Of course you are! :tongue.gif:
Try to make a bed, you can use it to move your spawn point into the tree. Saves you a potentially long run. :wink.gif:
