So, after a long hiatus, I started playing Minecraft again with the new update. I'm having trouble with hostile mobs though. They aren't spawning anywhere in my map, except for a few here or there at night (literally two or three). Difficulty setting doesn't seem to make a difference (I normally leave it on hard), location doesn't make a difference ( I've walked about 1000 blocks away), and I'm not using any mods whatsoever. Even with F3 up you can look around and the entities counter barely moves off 0, so they aren't all spawning in caves. Passive mobs seem okay, but they may be low too, I haven't really paid too much attention. Any help would be apriciated. And no, I'm definitely not on peaceful.
I'm having the same problem, on the over-world at night I seem to have more sheep and ducks walking around than hostile mobs. I've been going through entire cave systems without seeing a single hostile mob. Hostile mobs are still spawning though, I saw 2 skeletons fairly far apart playing with 8 ducks.
It would be nice to know what the issue is, I feel like I'm cheating on peaceful when the difficulty is normal/hard.
I made a superflat map and, although there were more, it still wasn't normal. Maybe 10 mobs aroun at night. I think passive mobs are normal, but I didn't really pay much attention to them. And jainaseagol, they should be scared of me, but that shouldn't stop them from spawning.

Mob spawning has changed, after a chunk has loaded with mobs spawning on them, they won't spawn anymore until you leave the region ( ~512m.) You'll probably notice that when you explore new lands at night, far away from your base, there will be dozens in once place.

Like I've said, I went about twice that and it didn't seem to help.
Reminds me of when I went spelunking in a cave for 30 minutes without running into one hostile mob....
Exactly as mentioned here. It almost feels like cheating going through the caves with no enemies. Also, I have a TON of sheep and ducks on my map....but I have yet to see a zombie or creeper 3 hours into making a world.

As in 512m, is that just like 512x or z away? Thx for the help!

Well here is my situation... I made a simple 4(8x8) mob grinder thats spider proof, it is pitch black in there, it has a 22 block fall. So, at first, it didnt work, constantly switched difficulty to peaceful, medium, hard. Nothing. Eventually, i went up and it was working! So i came back today to find it not spawning anything in hard difficulty. Any solutions of help i can get?
I'm having the same problem on the default 1.2.5 server. There is nothing spawning apart from what comes from mobs spawners and the occasional chicken, cow, etc.
this is still an issue in 1.3.2 it seems like after so many hostile mobs have been killed (skeleton spawner xp farm in my case) hostile mobs will stop spawning altogether, no matter where you go. i have to use a plugin on myt bukkit server called essentials and use the commands /killall skeleton , /killall creeper, /killall spider , /killall zombie , /killall enderman .. in order to get hostile mobs to start spawning again. this server is supposed to be vanilla but the plugin allows people to /sethome and /back as well as a number of other annoying things. it would be amazing if either A.) Jeb would fix his game. or B.) someone has a better (lighter) fix to this issue on smp servers (as well as single player for those who need it)
I saw someone post a thread just today stating in 1.3.2 that mobs outside of a players loaded chunks were not despawning. Not sure if true but if so that would be a big problem on a server and fall in line with what you describe.

Are passive mob spawn rates normal?

Curse PremiumI see hostile mobs everywhere.
I'm just a Minecraft player that likes to give my opinion. Nothing special to see here.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
