Then extend to your heart's content. (If you don't want pimpin' gold roads, use yellow wool)
If not INVedit:
Use , they look pretty.
Meh. Not really a fan of these.
If you're making a city realistic, it's probably the best design. (would fit about 2 IRL lanes, right?)
But if you aren't driving, it is a bit odd. I'd use half-blocks for a sidewalk next to it, because they rise only a bit above the road like real sidewalks. Now you have real life roads, for your realistic projects.
Also, I don't really intend to make the roads modern, looking for some medieval "follow the terrain" type roads, while looking pretty, barring the few tunnels I'll make.
To make my roads non modern for me is that i just put down one strip of smooth stone. I like the idea of putting glass over lava in the middle of the road posted by Nbord.
If you go for a road type look where it is virtually a road, Coal Blocks and Quartz would look quite nice as the road. For lighting you can use Cobblestone Walls and Glowstone as street lights. If you want to be able to ride a Horse on it, I suggest the road being 5 wide for a two lane road. for the lights, 7 tall and 2 out from the top of Cobblestone Walls and the a Glowstone block hanging off the last wall. EDIT: After further reading roads are out for OP. I suggest alternating in random fashion between Cobblestone textures, Stone textures, Stone Bricks textures, Grass textures, Gravel textures, and if playing in the new snapshots all the new block textures but mostly the Diorite and Andesite textures.
I usually do a 2 wide path of stone brick, and line the edges on either side with stone slabs. For small paths up to houses from the main road, just simple stone slabs. For long distances between towns and cities, the paths are much larger, with minecart tracks running through the center. For lighting I use fencepost and redstone lamps.
For long distance roads I use a simple marking system. Usually a block tha does not blend in with surroundings, with a single peice of fence on top and a tourch on top of that. In addition to this I assign colors to each direction (Ex Blue goes South). A main path going south is made of blue glass marker blocks. Other roads brach off from these as well.
For lighting: Inside town I use a tourch under a peice of colored glass that blends in with the road to light it. Longer paths i use a double high single fence post with a peice of burning netherrack atop. As that is abundant and cost effective.

Ahh. I know if I don't use this in my outdoor paths, I think I'll use it to light my tunnels.

And for lightning, I'm always use glowstone with trapdoor around it
