Now heres what you do... get a chest, place it, pour lava over it, place stuff inside, and make yourself a lava fountain out of it. (Don't worry, lava doesn't burn chests if covered :P)
After that just sit back and relax or whatever you do in your LAN server. :3

There's a thing you can do to name chests in an anvil to lock them, but I can NOT remember what to name it to lock chests! You name it something like this:{lockedChestData=1234}I don't know! It's something like that, but you would name it and then your passcode for that chest would be 1234, and the only way to enter that passcode is to name something else 1234 and right-click the chest while holding it. I'll tell you when I find out, but this only works with Minecraft 1.8 or higher.

Found it! Again, only works for Minecraft 1.8 and higher. So, it's not an anvil, it's a command block. Before starting, type this:
/give @p minecraft:command_block
If that doesn't work, open to LAN and change your gamemode to creative, or type:
/publish
and also type:
/gamemode @p 1
After that, place your command block down and right-click it, typing this:
/setblock ~ ~+1 ~ minecraft:chest 0 replace {Lock:"1234"}
And yes you need quotes!
Replace 1234 with whatever passcode you want and then it's locked, right after you shift+right-click the command block while holding a button (or lever) and right-clicking it!
A chest should appear right above the command block and now you can open by going into an anvil and naming anything the passcode you typed, (if you typed 1234 earlier, you would name anything 1234 in an anvil) and right click the locked chest with that item you named, and it opens!
Your very own locked chest!
Does that help, or too confusing?

Ender chest is the most safe place to keep your items
another, get yourself an potion of fire resistance, some ender pearl and a chest. go to the Nether, find seas of lava, drink the potion of fire resistance, swim through the lava and find some nice spot to place down your chest, place your items, and remember chest's spot, using netherrack and soulsand
An Ender chest has a unique inventory for each player. So everyone opening the chest can only see their own stuff. They also don't drop their inventory when broken, and even if all of the Ender chests on your world are broken, a newly created chest will have all your items inside.
You can even carry one with you and then place it whenever you want access to your items. Note that you'll need a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe to "mine" an Ender chest as an item (otherwise it breaks into Obsidian and will have to be crafted again).
Ender chests are secure, and work in vanilla Minecraft.

I guess it might be useful to anyone who doesn't know, but...still.
People will use X-Ray Mod to find your chest.
