Sounds like you're using a laptop... probably it thinks you want to use the extra keys instead of the F3. Try pressing the extra button (not Ctrl, Alt, AltGr, Menu, Windows, or Cmd, an extra one which name depends on the laptop, but it's usually in another color).
In my experience, it's usually "fn" for "function."
Yeah, on my laptop it's "fn". Just press fn then 3, and the coordinates should appear at the top left of your screen, as well as a bunch of other stuff. The coordinates will appear in a list:

y:
z:
And naturally, you'll want to look at the y one, as it deals with height in relation to the world.

If you're on a Mac, you have to System Preferences first, go to Keyboard, and check the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" box.

Try using the function key while pressing f3 or your control key.
Baseball, then Minecraft.
Thats only on the Xbox (and I think the ps3 but I dont have that version), because you don't have f3. Plus f3 is legit.
Or you can just use FN and then the F3 button.
