I want to see this done. Can someone please set up some sort of contraption to make a forest underwater? I mean, no glass rooms or frames, I mean an actual tree spawned underwater.
It might not be possible, trees might not be able to overwrite water blocks,
seems easy to do, put blocks in a 3*7*3 area, remove all but the top row, starting at the base, dig an area for the water to fall into at the bottom, plant a sappling in the middle, use bonemeal, then remove dirt?

if you plant a sapling in water it automatically pops out of the ground but maybe like the other person said you could grown atree inside a glass sorounded room and then break the glass. hopes this help!

I figured out how to get a stable sapling underwater.
I removed all of the water source blocks in a 3x3 square from the bottom of the lake (making 1-deep hole in the same shape) to the surface, and placed a couple blocks of dirt in the center of the indentation. There is a natural column of air in the center, and the water doesn't get on the dirt block. You place the sapling here. Another thing to make sure of (if you aren't using bonemeal) is that it will need a lot of light to be stable. You can just place a few jack-o-lanterns around the edge of the indentation for this.
did it, with pictures
and aparently leaves don't replace water? :biggrin.gif:
also, i made this while it was raining at first, and i also used a mod to make all the blocks brighter, so you can actualy see it...
1. make 3*7*3 box with dirt
2. dig out underneath it, leaving the dirt in the center
3. dig out the dirt from the bottom up, leaving the top layer
oh, i think i know why one tree only has 1 leaf, it's because i was using the builder mod + cheat mod (for inf air/health) in zombe's pack, and probably accidentaly hit it :biggrin.gif:
I have two theories on how this can be done. One is for Classic and the other should work for most minecraft versions.
1. For Classic
Find a big body of water. Place a sponge block. This should remove all water in a 5x5x5 area. Place sapling, and either let it grow, or bonemeal it.
2. For any version
Find big body of water. Dig a 1x1x1 hole (one block). Place a sign on the SIDE of one of the blocks surrounding the hole. Dig two blocks down from your hole. Place sapling at the bottom. Bonemeal the heck out of that sapling!!
If the second theory doesn't work, try a 2x2 hole instead, but use the same method of keeping the water at bay using signs. If you're using 1.7, you could use Dark Oak saplings and the 2x2 hole idea. Whatever size whole you do, make sure you dig 1 block deep and place the signs BEFORE digging any deeper.

This post may be old but here is how you can do it somewhat "legit" (without "removing" water)
Place 4 doors around 1 block (or something else that prevents water)
Place 2 Logs (of the tree you want to plant)
Remove the bottom one
Place Sapling
Bonemeal
Saplings can grow even when there is a block of their type above them
This might take quite some bone meal, because the doors prevent some of the tree forms.
Using stairs (that are just 1 block high) would spare some bonemeal (careful not to water-lock them)
It might not be possible, trees might not be able to overwrite water blocks,
BUT I WANT TO SEE IT!

1. Underwater cave
2. Make a frame, grow the tree, then break the frame.

like really, 3 posts, and yet ignored
2 use bone meal quickly
Doesn't work in deep water I just tried it.

This was in a snowy biome, hence the pine.
