I have been playing since Alpha and Creative was known as Classic back then. Is Creative cheating? Depends... if you're doing survival and using creative to pop in a bunch of blocks, ores, tools and other stuff to streamline the game and give yourself an advantage sure. Now if you're doing a major project on the other hand... maybe not.
like making something to do in creative then go to survival, like I put a bunch of illager spawners in a village then went to survival to defeat all the mobs.
You have a right to change the game mode because who cares? it's your world.
con.
Survival doesn't have a point anymore after you change the game mode to creative.
Here's part of the trick: if you can do More, than you ever - Ever - would've done before, using Creative; then, it's well. Creative (not destructive of the Survival experience).
The way to verify this, of course, is Play a Lot. Some of us have.
Yes, I changed to creative/spectator mode twice when I fell into lava in the Nether, both time the first time I did was pausing the game by ESC, then I typed the command to switch to other modes somewhere, copied it to the clipboard, then got back into the game, switched to other mode through LAN, pressed T and pasted the command, then I flew to safety and switched back to Survival.
One time I also used to use spectator mode to retrieve the items from when I died when mining in a mineshaft. And another time teleporting back to the nether portal when I went too far from it when exploring the Nether, I had saved the coordinates but felt too lazy to go all the way back to that portal.
I needed to use those cheating, otherwise when dying and losing items, or spending too much time like when I travelling manually would make me very frustrated and I may lose my will to play any further. I reasoned that I just wanted to save my time when cheating in those cases and not for the purpose of gaining items my Steve couldn't get his hands on.
There are some cases where I allow myself to cheat. Collecting items after I die is one of them.
I don't really enjoy risk. Survival mode is fun because I need to collect resources, build farms and actually earn what I build. The threat of dying isn't enjoyable to me.
Here is my complete list of exceptions:
1. If I die, I can switch to creative to collect my items, but nothing else
2. I can use commands to fix items or blocks lost due to a bug
3. I can use external tools to learn information about my world, such as finding strongholds, biomes, or slime chunks.
4. I can change the mobGriefing, doFireTick, doInsomnia, and keepInventory gamerules.
5. Clientside mods such as JEI, Tape Mouse and Journeymap which are nice for quality of life but give no real gameplay advantage are allowed.
6. I'm allowed to choose a specific seed or tweak world generation to my liking
In modded Minecraft I also allow a few more:
1. I can use commands to teleport myself freely. This is mostly to accelerate the early game, because I like to play much faster in a modded environment. In vanilla I'll put time into making bridges or getting an elytra instead.
2. Cheating in items to test things is fine, as long as I don't keep anything or gain any survival advantage.
3. I can switch to spectator mode to look at my pipes.
4. I can spawn in some items to help my get past the early game faster. I've probably made a first set of tinkers' tools twenty or thirty times over the years.
After Years of going-to get-items, it becomes something I can( 't) do in my sleep, it starts to feel like. But rather-than having to obsess-basically at doing-it Always the Slowest way, I just Attempt, carefully (gets tricky when Inv'y. gets-close to full, as Creative Mode for-example will Delete items beyond the Inv'y. limit, so rules are put-on Armor, Shield - avoid picking-up Mob-Griefed [Creepers, Endermen, et. al. ] and-dropped, dropped items, generally Blocks).
To pick it up. And re-start (this's especially good after a "Bug," such as Lag and /or "Glitch").
If its survival, therefore you have to suffer. for instance, you lost your items when you died, therefore you have to craft or make a new one, That's the magic of survival mode.
-I never die and I never will.
Nice Edit there. By The Way (which you don't never do).
To me though, the main point you're making is that Survival Mode is magic. It's just the capacity to endure suffering that's being increased.
Beyond a certain point, suffering is just suffering. Beyond a given point, more pain is Loss, not gain.
I only use creative like if I am travelling I go to creative to get back there fast, it my be cheating.
that's what I do.
Yeah, and sure I Build Nether-side Bases (I found them in the Overworld side, focusing on that side, and space them out more than the 1,000'ish Blocks to avoid crazy-'Porting "snapping" somewhat-Randomly). They're super-massive, allowing for Horse-types to be-used more-or-less totally safely, with them (even Mounting /Dismounting without hitting one's head every time), with Markers-between to find the way, Bridges, Stairs.. often going-through Nether Fortresses (carefully), as useful "incomplete 'high'-'way' would-be 'intersections'," Markers, themselves... but after 4 (i.e. Edit, traveling, in a Row so 4K Blocks ++ ) of them, find myself " /tp " 'ing, most-every time (used to take-resources en-masse via Nether, for Years).
Now I’m wondering if it is cheating if I am playing in creative mode and temporarily switch to survival mode. If not, why not? It is a whimsical but philosophical question.
Well, Is it possible to "Cheat," if one is Playing Creative Mode significantly? Just outright-Playing it, for its own sake??
That's probably a completely different question from anything-about Survival. "More /less" Fun, of Survival and /or Creative, would mean that one - one's Point Of View, individually - values one or the other, more.
I'd Had a Creative Mode-World, but essentially-Never used it for Survival. More-importantly, I essentially-Never Played it, compared to Survival (more often just switch-to Creative to test-something, in a Temp. /Test World [then-discard and /or otherwise never-re-use]), so that's pretty clear to me, but if you don't know - what you don't know - then maybe you should Play Both - in whatever combination(s) - more (As it's just a Game) ; that might not-be: so Philosophical.
But we can't change the meaning of the word cheat.
According to Google, the definition of cheat is toact dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination.
If I'm on a server, using commands for a survival advantage is almost always cheating. In singleplayer it's different. There's no one to deceive or be unfair to except yourself.
If you spawn in a bunch of diamonds and tell your friends you got them legitimately, that's cheating. If you choose to play the game in a way it's intended, but don't lie about it, that's different.
Playing the game with no commands, exploits, save edits or custom seeds is the most strictly survival way to play, but I think it's incorrect to say every other way is cheating. Even if it was, the definition of exploit has some wiggle room.

You got me when you search the meaning of cheat on google.

1 Whatever makes you feel guilty after doing.
2 Cheat codes originated in the playtesting phase of video game development where the creators want to test certain portions of the game. So there are codes intentionally put in to make that process easier.
3 Hardcore Gamers does not use it ( like me)

1. Whatever, as long as you find it fun.
You are using the game and exploiting it in a way that it wasn't meant to be played. yes, you are cheating. As for cheat codes, they are called CHEAT codes for a reason...

This is a really black and white view of cheating. Let's take a look at each one individually.
1 Whatever makes you feel guilty after doing.
This is probably the best definition. I would feel guilty if I cheated in a diamond, but not if I played the game in peaceful mode for a while.
2 Cheat codes originated in the playtesting phase of video game development where the creators want to test certain portions of the game. So there are codes intentionally put in to make that process easier.
This is a semantic argument. If we want to use this definition, than Minecraft doesn't have cheats, it has commands.
3 Hardcore Gamers does not use it ( like me)
What kind of hardcore gamer? I know hardcore Minecraft players who only play PvP, or only adventure maps, and one who refuses to ever craft a diamond pickaxe because it makes his mines more impressive. By that definition, is it cheating to craft a diamond pickaxe in a regular survival world? Obviously not.
4. No challenge at All
If I spawn in items willy nilly, sure. That's not what I do, though. The way I play is still challenging, even if creepers aren't a constant threat.
At the end of the day, there is no strict definition of cheating in a singleplayer game. You enjoy playing with your rules, and I enjoy playing with mine. Neither is cheating unless I lie and say I was playing your way.
Me and my friend have a Minecraft world which we beat the dragon but not the wither yet. We found a end city and got an elytra, but we wanted two so we looked for another city. When we found another one there was boat so we could get the elytra. My friend ended up getting the elytra but then fell of into the void when retreating. He left the game at the last second before dying. It was 0.2 seconds to throw his pearl up to the top of the island again. But we went into creative for three seconds so we could go back into survival and then keep replaying the same scenario until we got it. On the third try he pearled up. Now we’re just wondering if that’s cheating.
It is certainly cheating to the extent that cheating is a thing in a single player survival Minecraft game. However, it’s one of the beauties of Minecraft that you can play the way you choose and the only person who can judge you is you.
Play the way you get the most enjoyment. If that involves occasionally doing something other people would choose not to do, it’s no-one’s business but your own.
I only switched over to creative once due to the items I had being destroyed in lava spending a few days on getting I got so pissed so I just re-obtained my inventory that I had then switched right back over to survival. In all honesty I don't care if people are like "you cheated" because I still have the fun an the challenge is still there for me on survival an I still enjoy it as if I didn't switch over once. But it's a game to release your imagination an have fun with so who cares what others think it's your game an your world.

And so, to an extent. Game-life saving (too).

Cheating in the technical sense, but it's not cheating yourself out of enjoying the game, if you enjoy it.
