After watching many Let's Plays and noticing how much thought I put into organization of my own hotbar, I've come to the realization of just how important hotbar organization is in Minecraft. And yet, I've never seen it discussed before.
Personally, I go with this arrangement:
1. Bow or, if possible, item enchanted with good knockback
5. Solid, placeable blcok (usually cobblestone)
7. Gravity-affected block (sand or gravel)
How about you?
Sword/Bow (never both, I'm not a dual warrior)
Bucket/Shears/Flint+Steel (depends on what I'm doing)
Any non-gravity block such as cobble, dirt or Netherrack
(While mining, I can quickly go from pick to sword and torch :biggrin.gif:)
It's not just my hotbar that's organized, but my inventory too.
~ Hotbar ~
1. Sword - Allows me to quick-tap 1 for an emergency Melee.
2. Axe - I can quick-tap 2 to chop some wood easy.
3. Pickaxe - Quick-tap the 3 key and mine some diamonds!
4. Shovel - Quick-tap 4 to diggy diggy hole!
5. Torches - I actually don't quick-tap beyond 4, so I have to scroll here.
6, 7, 8 - Misc. Usually blocks for building or a different type of pickaxe [Eg: Diamond will be on 8 while Stone will be on 3, to save on diamonds.]
9. Bow (If applicable) - If no bow is available, it's another misc slot.
~ Inventory ~ [Left-to-right, 1-9. Top-to-bottom, A-C]
A9. Logs - All my logs are in the top-right slot to make wood management simple, as wood is a valuable resource.
B9. Planks - Wood-related builds.
C9. Sticks - You get the picture.
C1-8 - Generally spare tools. I usually fill from C1 first and go right from there. Misc items replace spare slots.
A1 or A8 - Usually coal, but it sometimes goes somewhere else. I also have a tendency to use both A1 AND A8 for coal, which makes my emergency torching a lot slower.
1 - Iron Pickaxe
2 - Shovel/Axe
3 - Shovel/Axe
4 - Iron/Diamond Sword
5 - Wooden Hoe/Diamond Pickaxe (whichever is in use, sometimes hoe gets boxed)
6 - Misc/Food
7 - Misc/Food
8 - Bow
9 - Torches
Though it is never as organised as that all the time. Some stuff gets switched around. Sometimes my torches are on 5, for example. Sometimes I just can't be arsed and everything is just a big muddle. As for the inventory, it is always a big muddle!
But my chests... they must be in perfect organisation. If I can't keep my hotbar and inventory in order, I can with my chests.
If I have just one chest:
Row1 - Hostile mob drops
Row2 - Friendly mob drops, meat food.
Row3 - Ores, materials and misc.
Row4 - Cobble, gravel, sand, dirt.
Row5 - Saplings, wood, wooden grafted stuff, leaves.
Row6 - Plants, flowers, seeds, dyes, non-meat food.
