A sword first, because 1 is the closest to the movement keys and I get into combat with mobs very often and very suddenly, and need to immediately be able to fight back.
A pickaxe second, because stone or stone-like materials are very frequently in my way and mining is important.
A shovel or axe third, depending on what I'm doing or where I am.
Then torches, a bow, blocks, potions, or food in the following slots, I'm not sure why people reserve multiple slots for dirt/cobblestone; it seems silly to need more than one kind of block on the hotbar unless you're building.
After watching many Let's Plays and noticing how much thought I put into organization of my own hotbar, I've come to the realization of just how important hotbar organization is in Minecraft. And yet, I've never seen it discussed before.
Personally, I go with this arrangement:
1. Bow or, if possible, item enchanted with good knockback
2. Sword
3. Torches
4. Pickaxe
5. Solid, placeable blcok (usually cobblestone)
6. Shovel
7. Gravity-affected block (sand or gravel)
8. Food
9. Misc.
How about you?
I usually do this:
Sword
Pickaxe
Axe
Shovel
Hoe
Shears (If not possible, Bow)
Torches
Food (Bread or anything with a low hunger reduce.)
Food (Steak, Chicken, or anything with a High hunger reduce.)
I do a variation of Etho Style, I've found the 1-5 settings to be most "efficient".
1. Pick
2. Shovel
3. Sword
4. Bow/Axe, only ever need one at a time
5. Food
6. Empty almost always, nice to have a spot on your hotbar to use or toss any stray items you pick up
7. Empty/Water Bucket during caving
8. Block, dirt during off time and building, cobble when caving
9. Torches
The only thing I stick to when building is that 1-5 are always the same. The rest could have torches and blocks, all blocks, or whatever.
I pick on my friend all the time fpr the "Paulsoaresjr" style:
1. Sword
2. Bow
3. Pick
4. Shovel
5. Axe/food
6-9. anything

Well, mine is a variation of the Paulsoaresjr style. Deal with it. Part of it is because of Direwolf20 though, it's the torches-next-to-the-pick thing.
This is how I usually organize my inventory:
#1: Pickaxe
#2: Sword
#3: Bow
#4: Axe
#5: Shovel
I usually leave #6 and #7 open for anything else I might need, such as golden apples, blocks, potions, etc.
#8: Torches
#9: Food
1: Pickaxe
2: 2nd Pickaxe
3: Axe
4: Not-so-needed blocks
5: Foods
6: Spade
7: Hoe
8: Sword
9: Crafting tables
Goodbye, Halloween. See you next year.

1) Sword - My go to slot for quick reflexes for dem' creepers.
2) Pickaxe - Silk touch in general, or fortune when I need it.
3) Axe - I'm actually suprised that so little people keep their axe in their 3rd slot.
4) Shovel - Not sure what to say here.
5) Bow - Usually in the 5th slot, but could also be in the second slot and shift the other slots down one.
6) Ender Pearls - If I have an Ender Ender, ender pearls are a MUST HAVE!
7) Torches - For lighting up things, and placing torches around in OCD patterns.
8) A building block - Usually Stone/Cobble
9) Food - Steak, Chicken, or Taters (Depending on what type of farm I have setup).
When building projects - Anything goes
Modded Minecraft - Results may vary.
Also, yes the xp levels in the snapshot are legit... easily done with an ender ender.
